Trip Report:
Absolutely stellar night at Wawa. Summit was the best it's been all year. The new manmade is perfect and it's easily the best all year. Good to see a cold late winter pay off. Crowds were very low and it was a perfect night to be out.
Conifer/Balance Rock: Second day all season Balance Rock has been open. It was scratchy in the middle, but boot-deep manmade to the sides. Tips of grass were showing here and there, but not bad considering we're talking about Balance Rock in March after having no base at all yesterday. Conifer was VERYbumpy before grooming with soft manmade bumps. After grooming, it was very nice. No ice at all and just perfect cruising.
10th: Great all night. Took multiple runs down it and they were all great. Not one patch of ice at all. The bumps recieved new snow last night. They're actually decent shaped now and soft besides scratchy troughs. To the groomed side, it was very fast and fun.
Smith: Perfect. After a little while, there were a few ice patches just before the steep from people hitting the brakes right there, but absolutely perfect otherwise. Tons of places to get air too. Polar Express was running quicker than normal and the longest line was 15 chairs, which lasted a whole 30 minutes. Saw a very tall guy, thought perhaps it was Sky?
Hitchcock: Same as usual. Tons of mounds for air, pretty icy, and OK otherwise. No one skiing it tonight. It was almost eerie on it, like in the old days before the beginner park.
Look Mom: Exact same as last Friday, except pretty icy. Less people hitting the big air than last time due to the conditions not being so good on that side of the mountain. Pipe was pretty good.
Challenger: Went down once, all alone. Skiied in the racing grooves and did the course in about 38 seconds, 2 more than the racers usually hit. Kind of tough to tell exactly when to turn without the gates, but fun. Rest of the trail was excellent. Minuteman was running faster than normal and ski-on the whole night.
Well, after a 17th chapter to Wawa's 06 season, today was the best of them. Hopefully this weather lasts, so they can keep putting down the manmade. I'm afraid if it snows, it'll warm up again. They hope that if snowmaking operations continue for a few more days at least and weather cooperates decently down the road, they might try to make it to Easter. I also have my VT March schedule:
3/12: Sugarbush (Both hopefully, but more focus on South)
3/13: MRG
3/18: Smuggs
3/19: Smuggs
3/26: K-Mart
3/27: K-Mart
