What areas will you ski again, but hate to admit it?

Inspired by the thread http://forums.alpinezone.com/9124-what-ski-areas-will-you-never-ski-again-2.html, what area will you visit again, but feel you have to justify?

For me, I'll shamefully admit Stratton. Yes, it's flat, caters to the big money, non-skiers, but I have a lot of friends that work there and, mid-week, it can be fun and relaxing.

Come on! Admit it! There's some place you're ashamed to admit that you'll ski! Come out of the closet! It's like bringing out those Barbara Streisand records at your party. (You'll never live it down!)

Da Bronx Zoo North (aka Hunter)

I've skied there way too much and put up with far too many [anuses] from Noo Yawk and Nawth Joisey.

Unfortunately, it's a good mix of vertical, challenging terrain, & proximity to NJ, and they usually have at least 2 paths down from the summit by Thanksgiving Day. And Annapurna, Clair's, Upper Cliff, and Eisenhower are amongst my favorite trails (when they're not bulletproof).

Stratton is running a close second, for basically the same reason previously quoted.

And where might you be from? Don't be so quick to insult. There are many of us anuses on this forum as well.

Attitash - I really dislike the mountain and the terrain is terrible but my boss has a condo up in N Conway and a season pass there. He invites me up once a season or so and well I can't really tell him where to go when I'm at his place.

I'll pick Stratton too. I hate it for the reasons Sled mentions, but my youngest son and I had a good time the day we went. It was mid-week, I had free vouchers, it was late season, and 2 of their trails where bumped up nice. We have a deal with my wife that if he stays on high honor roll we cut school one day and ski. He basically skis WF, Gore, West (nites ski club), Jiminy, so I like to expose him to at least 1 new mountain each season.

If Stratton comes through with the free vouchers again will go back. If not... naaah.

You have more good things to say about Hunta then bad. You're entitled to your opinion, but every place has it's pluses and minuses, even Sugarbush. There I've commited AZ blasphemy and I'm glad...glad I tell you.

Stratton for the same reasons? Come on, the terrain at Hunta is way better,

MT. Snow, flat as a board, diversity in terrain=0% and full of share-houser's (i was one of them) from NY, NJ and Bahston

why I ride there: too lazy to drive another two and half hours to a real mountain like Sugarbush...

other place I cant stand: Killington on the weekends...its torture looking up at the vertical waiting for the gondola to finally arrive...though midweek with snow its effin awesome

Okemo on weekends as well...read above replace "Gondola" with "HS quad"

Stratton=Aspen East without the challenge--will do my best not to ride there

The topic of the thread has to lead to insulting mountains. What areas will you ski again, but hate to admit it? You pretty much have to qualify why you hate to admit it and the reasons you go there anyway.

I'll have to disagree with you on this one, peaks...or at least clarify my statement. I understand that the nature of the thread leads to a critique of the MOUNTAIN. I should have said don't be so quick to categorize PEOPLE from NY and NJ as anuses.

Is Hunter very crowded? Yes.
Crowded with many people from NY and NJ? Yes.
Does Hunter have a different "vibe" than a typical N.E. mountain? Absolutely
Are Hunter's patrons anuses? I would would say no more than any other mountain.

I've heard this over and over about Hunter and it's starting to grate on me.

Snowmiser, welcome to the forum. Don't forget to post in the New Member's Introduction Thread.
I shouldn't have been so quick to react, but I hadn't had my coffee yet. ;)

Hunter gets a bad rap...its not as bad as people make it out to be for sure...and for terrain new the "tri state" area it really can't be beat...close, not expensive, good apres ski....

Great apres ski. The bar in the lodge is huge! It gets crowded, but you can always find a place to hide if need be. Good bands too. (ahem...especially 23A)

If I ever go back to Wa wa, I won't admit it. Flat, no interesting trails, way too crowded, too expensive for what you get, and it's a nightmare to drive out Rt. 2 at rush hour. In the future, if I simply must slide on something after work, I'll go do rails on Prospect Hill.

Based on what folks think of it, I hate to admit that I liked Stratton on the day we went and am looking forward to going back next Vermonter Day. Nice terrain. Mellow, but fun. Those lifts are FASSSSTTTT! Lots of runs...covered most of the expert stuff in a day.

My apologies to BeanoNYC, HighPeaksDrifter, and anyone else who was offended by my earlier post.

I did NOT intend to characterize all people from the NY/NJ metro area as anuses. Unfortunately, as you have probably noticed, this area has a disproportionate number of them, and when they bolt boards to their feet, where do they usually end up skiing??? I know; I've run into (literally) more than a few of them. (Maybe I've just skied there too often)

By the way, I grew up in Middlesex County, so I'm probably no prize myself.

But you have to admit: when you're standing in a lift line and an out-of control snowboarder panic-stops just inches from taking your legs out, and when he gets up he's wearing a Hunter Mtn Ski Patrol jacket, that has to say something about the mountain.

Again, my sincere apologies

No apologies necessary, dude. You're from the shore, so you resemble that remark as well. ;) Like I said, I was too hasty to comment. My skin doesn't get thick until my first cup of coffee. What ski club do you belong to?

I want to get back to Bretton Woods on a non-holiday week...

It may have a reputation as being too flat and groomed, but they keep the slopes in great shape and the views of Mt. Washington are nice...not as good as Wildcat, I'd guess, but nice nevertheless.

It does have a nice location. They have done a lot of work. But I just can't tell people to spend in excess of $60 to ski only 1,500' of flat vert. I think it is too expensive for what it is and is only going to get more expensive. That's why we need some more BW Freebies  Not gonna complain about free skiing!!!

Agree...the only way I'd go back is if I could get discounted or free tickets...

Then again, I've made it a rule to avoid "paying sticker price" to ski in any case.

I don't think I would waste the gas and time to go there even with a free lift ticket. Same goes for Stratton. The day I went last year contributed to one less weekend that I spent skiing a good mountain.
