Da Bronx Zoo North (aka Hunter)

I've skied there way too much and put up with far too many [anuses] from Noo Yawk and Nawth Joisey.

Unfortunately, it's a good mix of vertical, challenging terrain, & proximity to NJ, and they usually have at least 2 paths down from the summit by Thanksgiving Day. And Annapurna, Clair's, Upper Cliff, and Eisenhower are amongst my favorite trails (when they're not bulletproof).

Stratton is running a close second, for basically the same reason previously quoted.

New Yorker and Hunter regular here.

I congratulate you...it takes a real man to admit he likes Hunter and will go there again.

Okemo, one of the most boring mountains I've ever skied. But you gotta give the snowmakers and groomers credit... its worth a visit.

Okemo, I guess. I don't know when I'll be there again, but i figure at some point I will, if I'm faced with an opportunity to ski at Okemo or not ski. Probably should add Stratton to the list, but Okemo was first to come to mind since I've skied there more times (Stratton only once, Okemo probably 5 or 6 times).

Can't think of any specifically. I will still hit up early season Kmart or Sunday River on a really cheap/free ticket, but I would freely admit that without any thought.

Belleayre. The terrain is boring, except the top which can be very difficult. I'n not a real bump skier so it limits me a bit, unless I'm feeling very ambitious and want to hit huge ice moguls. But since I have a house up the road from there it's kind of stupid if I don't hit it once in a while. A powder day is another story, then it rocks.

Another "Huntah Hatah" here. Despite a couple of nice yet short steep runs (k27, annapurna, etc.), the place really lacks something. If I get another freebie day, I'll go again. But I'm not really sure whether its all the gapers, tough guys, boring trails, limited vert or crappy scenery (sorry if you like the scenery, but to me, a blasted out mountain is ugly as hell. It looks like the mountain was made by the NYS Thruway Dept). I guess omething about the place just doesn't sit "right" with me. If I had to spend money, I'd rather take it to Plattekill, Jiminy or even West mountain before Huntah.

I like Hunter. And I think 1,600' vert is respectable. The mountain also definitely has legit pitch. I agree the layout is sort of weird and the mountain itself is far from pretty, but I disagree on the scenery comment. When I'm skiing, the scenery I'm concerned with is views which Hunter has plenty of. I'm about 2:15 from Hunter and I probably wouldn't travel much further to go there, but for me, the only other mountain within 2:30 that challenges Hunter for vert and pitch is Mount Snow.

I'm not going to be too specific here, but DMC pointed out some sick OB tree skiing to be had at Huntah...

Never again on Stratton a miserable experience.

Once I have kids, King Pine will unfortunately call me back though.....

OB Tree skiing at Hunter just might cure my bad impression. I guess growing up near there has given me that "yeah, so what" attitude about the scenery. For 1600' of vert, the mountain feels like it skis much smaller than that. Maybe I've just been on the wrong days, but my 3 visits there have been "eh, a day of skiing is always better than a day at the office".

Jiminy Peak - ridiculously wide and boring trails, but I'm sure I'll have to come back due to their early openings and late closing.
Butternut - wicked flat (flatter than Flatton), crowded, and I find it to be boring. However, I'll likely be forced to come back due in the near future due to the fact that a number of my friends go there.
Mohawk - also wicked flat and boring, but being twenty minutes away, there really aren't other options. In the future, I'll likely buy a season pass at Catamount, but even then, I'll still be forced to go to Mohawk sometimes since it's the closest.

Mountain Creek - Overpriced, cheap on the snowmaking, it's a trek from the parking lot to the mountain, the Cabriolet gondola among quite a few other negatives.

But - it's only 10 minutes from the house so I'll go there at least once during the season, last year I had a free ticket, hopefully I'll have one this year.

Phil sniffs bait and swims away. Does having to be there for work purposes count?

Okemo. Honestly, I just don't feel comfortable skiing that mountain, but with my Wachusett pass giving me 50% off at Okemo, it doesn't make sense not to go (although I will say that if Bromley continues their $25 mid-week lift ticket they had this past season, I will probably go there instead if I can convince my ski buddy to switch mountains).

The thing about Okemo is I just don't like their lift layout. I like Jackson Gore quite a lot, but you can't buy your lift tickets there on weekdays (you have to go to the main base) and my buddy and I are lazy and don't want to go to the main base first and then drive over to Gore (especially since we usually arrive after noontime so have limited time on the slopes anyway - it's a long drive up there and neither of us get up early in the morning).

But... 50% off is appealing, so Okemo will probably be on the hit-list again even though I'd rather hit Bromley or Killington (neither of which are that significantly further away).

Suggestion...go on a weekday, preferably when snowmaking is ongoing/happened recently.

In response to the topic: Killington-I hate the management, but the terrain/size/reasonable distance is too good for me to not continue going there.

Yeah, me too. The place does nothing for me, but between its proximity to my club's lodge, their generous distribution of mega-discount coupons, its having been chosen for the 2008 CSC Winter Carnival and the number of ASIA clinics held there, I ended up putting in at least 10-12 days there this season. With the cost of gas becoming a bigger factor it might be even more in 08/09. Still, sliding on snow is better than nothing.

Check on that again. Many's the weekday I've pulled into the JG lot, paid for the lifts and been on the mountain within a few minutes. So much easier and no hassles. I don't know if this is the case for late season but mid-winter, they're definitely open.
