Okay. Here's this season's version of this thread. Here's my list from last year:
  • Burke
  • Cannon
  • Sunapee
I only made it to Sunapee and the 90 minutes I skied there barely qualifies as a visit. So Burke and Cannon are still on the table for this season. By hook or by crook, I'm going to make it to Burke. I'm even considering just day tripping it. If I really haul, I can make it to White River Junction in 2:30. How much further is Burke (trailboss?) another 1:15, 1:30?

I really want to try to hit Gore this season too. That's really at the outer edge of a day-trippable mountain, but it's doable. I'd love to try Whiteface too; a possibility...

I just made a trip from Ascutney to Lyndon State College up 91 and it took about 1:20-1:30 and when you hit White River Junction you'll already be on 91 so I would say you can make it in 1 hour going 71 mph (my cruise was set at this and i never need the brakes).

Greg--

You've got it with Burke. I might suggest doing an overnight so you can hit both Burke and Cannon...Burke on Sat and Cannon on Sun.

Burke is 1:15 from my house, which is right off 91. Depending on traffic and time of day, it can take anywhere from 10-20 mins to get from 91 to Burke going through Lyndonville. Now if I was at my parent's, Burke is about 15 mins.

Now my list:

* Mount Snow

* Sugarloaf

* Dartmouth Ski Way

* Whaleback

* Storr's Hill

All of them!

Seriously:
Mt. Snow - its one of the closer areas in VT from CT
Stowe - I've heard the village is great. God willing, we will be expecting a future little skier and she will need something to do while I'm making turns
Something in Northern VT - Suggestions? I'm still building my skill set and keep my planks inbounds.

Sort of pseudo-Northern Vermont, but Sugarbush is a must. Tons of great terrain for all abilities, albeit a bit heavy on the expert side, at least at South.

For Northern Vermont if you are still learning, do Smuggs. Great variety. Burke is good for a high intermediate and above....but good skiers will more appreciate the terrain.

Stowe
Smuggs
Burke
Pico
Telluride

Places I've been, but not enough to really count:
Cannon (only went once years ago when I wasn't good)
Sugarbush (only been on Mt. Ellen)

Last season, I said MRG and Burke. I got to MRG... albeit on one of the days they were open on just a foot of snow in late March. Somehow it still left me satisfied. Only MRG can do that.

This season:

Burke
Ragged
Stowe

TB and Greg, thanks for the suggestions. I would consider myself a high intermediate. I hit Sundown a bunch last season and would do laps on Gunbarrel (but I know that a black in CT is much different than VT).

Like Grassi21 I would like to hit up all of 'em this year too, but realistically I would like to hit:
  • Bolton Valley
  • Sugarloaf
  • Dartmouth Skiway
  • Ascutney
  • Black Mountain, NH
  • Stowe
  • Whaleback
  • Sunday River
  • Killington (Only because I've never been there)

I bought an ASC pass to see about getting some of the larger ones so that I can say that I've been to them, but I also hope to frequent more of the smaller ones as well. The list is endless, but these are the really need to ski versus the want to ski eventually.

Although I finally got some western skiing under my belt, which is good too...:-D

And many more, but that's probably all I will be able to do in one season.

No offense to Sundown, but Gunbarrel is like an easy blue at most of the bigger VT resorts. Have you skied up North yet, Grassi?

Agreed. I have hit everything in CT except Woodbury and Powder Ridge. Every time I point my tips down a black in CT I feel like I'm making out with my sister (I don't really have a sister). The trails seem to lack the pitch, challenge, and character of anything I've seen further north.

I have skied 2 days at Jiminy and 4 at K-Mart. I'm hoping this will be my break-out season. The goal is 20+ days and as many lessons as I can get in. I'm hoping to get a solid number of days during Dec and Jan in CT and then venture further north in Feb and March so I can really appreciate the bigger mountains. My time at Killington was spent cruising the greens and blues (Header, Bunny Buster, Rime).

Well, Gunbarrel has the most pitch of anything in CT, for sure. I personally like the challenge of Nor'easter best at Sundown.

Jiminy has decent pitch; not quite legit VT black diamondness, but close. It's really more a matter of a lack of sustained pitch there.

if you want to over night it, i'll offer up my couch for crash space if you are interested. normally i don't do mid-week, but i will have free mid-weeks at burke, so keep me posted if you come up for a friday! should be an hour and thirty after WRJ, so you are looking at four hours each way.

new areas for the season:
Smuggs (finally!)

that is about it. i keep saying i want to hit smaller areas like middlebury, dartmouth, balsams, etc. but never get there. if we have a stretch of non-snowy weather when any of these hills are 100% open, i am so there. on the "need to get back there" list of places i already have been, i'm going with saddleback/sugarloaf combo trip and sugarbush south.
