Heading up on Sunday. Any advice, knowledge, etc? First time there, don't know a thing about the place.

Haven't they gotten dumped on this past week, with more to come. I ski Hunter every week, my edges are always sharp.

Whiteface received 4 feet of snow in the last 8 days. It's snowin' right now and there's more on tap for tomorrow into Friday. The weekend will be epic. Ski the trees is just mindlessly repeating something he's heard from other posers. That's common among the lobotomized. "Iceface" is just too clever a moniker to ever go away, That's OK with us; it keeps ski the trees and the other gapers down in southern vermont where they belong.

That said, what do you want to know? Whiteface is a big, steep mountain but there's cruisers and genteler terrain. There's even a dedicated beginner area. Go here for solid info but be more specific. What kinda terrain do you like? What other info do you need?

four feet in eight days? i'd like to see some cold hard stats on that one. their web site doesn't seem to list the beta, but snocountry says they only have 70-75 trails open. how can any ski area get four feet in eight days and not have the entire mountain open?

Herb Stevens said (yesterday) between 3 to 4 feet since 2/21. By my math it was 43"-46". Whatever.

Ahhh, don't sell your mountain short Willy . . . there's plenty of Gapers at whiteface too. Fortunately, you can mostly avoid them if you stay off Excelsior and Lower Valley.

If you get there early go down the hill and park in Lot 1, its right before the bridge. If you're late go over the bridge and park on the Kids Kampus access road. A bus comes buy every few minutes to pick people up.

Start on the Gondi at 8:30. If you are a diamond skier take a right on the summit of L. Whiteface and you'll have your choice of Northway, Clodsplitter Glades, Empire, Mackenzie, Wilderness, Mt. Run and Parkway.

At 9:00 the Summit chair opens, you an take the Face Lift to the Summit Chair. If you want to ski the gondi go down Excelisor to turn 3, cut across connector to lower couldspin and you'll get to the summit quad.

Here's hoping the Slides will be open again this weekend.

For lunch I highly rcommend the Bistro, bottom floor of the mid station lodge. They have some great food at reasonable prices.

Kingslug-
Get there early and warm up on excel. before it gets skied off.
Don't miss mountain run- it's long, wide and a great deal of fun.
Don't just take upper/lower valley to get down- enjoy the flatter terrain to the left of boule's bistro to rest the legs for another top to bottom leg burner.
Oh and it's not ice - its nice and it lets you go fast.

As far as terrain goes, whatever you got is fine for me. Bumps, just not very steep ones, cruisers to rest on, anything. Looks like the snow will be good so I'm stoked.

The beauty of Whiteface is its sustained pitch. You can ride up to the summit and rocket down to the bottom without any annoying flat spots that kill all your speed, or even the dreaded lift ride half way down (something I hate about Loon, Gore, etc) just so you can make it from a summit area to the base. Whtieface is steep and fast, and usually it gets the name "Iceface" on holiday weeks when the masses that think a black diamond at their local hill is going to compare to a black at Whiteface. Also, the gondola really only has one blue trail down from the summit of Little Whiteface, with a few variations. Either way its a complete madhouse by 930 so I say just stick to the blacks.

My recomendations to you are that unless you like the park, dont venture below midstation. My usual routine is one ride on up the gondi in the morning then laps on the summit or the little whiteface double chair from in front of mid. You wont wait in a single lift line this way, and youll have access to the best terrain Whiteface offers. You wont find a faster mt in the east.
