PINKHAM NOTCH, New Hampshire -- Wildcat Mountain, high up in Pinkham Notch, NH, has once again announced plans to extend ski area operations an additional week, and hopes to operate through the week of April 23rd. The tentative rescheduled closing date is now Sunday April 29th. Wildcat is slated to be the last ski area open in the State of New Hampshire for the 2006/07 ski season. Notably, Wildcat was the first ski area to open it's doors for the 2005/06 ski season when it opened for the weekend on October 28th, 2005, after a storm had dropped over four feet of snow on the mountain.
The recent Nor'Easter that produced rain across most of New England, dropped three feet of snow on Wildcat Mountain, bringing April snowfall to six feet at Wildcat Mountain.
"This storm was the third significant snow storm in this month alone," reports Tom Caughey, Wildcat's General Manager. "We're skiing and riding on terrain that has rarely been skiable for the last few years. The conditions are excellent." Wildcat Mountain's trail system is 100% open, with some new areas of tree-skiing open this season as well. Located only one mile from the parking area for spring skiing mecca Tuckerman Ravine on Mt. Washington, Wildcat has been famous for its long spring skiing season since opening in 1957. Wildcat will celebrate its 50th ski season next season, in 2007/2008.
The current weather forecast issued by the National Weather Service indicates mostly sunny days and mild temperatures right through Monday, into next week. According to Caughey it is possible that fickle spring weather could eventuate a closing earlier than April 29th, so folks should keep a close eye on the Snow Report page on Wildcat's web site. It is not likely that the season would be extended beyond April 29th, as preparations are underway for maintenance and construction relating to Wildcat's summer operations which include Wildcat's summer scenic gondola skyride and the installation of a new 2,100 foot ZipRider cable zip-line ride. Wildcat's summer operations begin on Memorial Day Weekend, and the ZipRider is anticipated to open in the month of June.
