I guess what I meant was it hasn't affected me to the point that I've changed my driving habits all that much or ran out to buy a hybrid...

Filled up my car yesterday (yikes! and I have a subaru!) and it got me wondering if the high price of gas would keep skiers away from the slopes next winter. What if it goes higher -- like up to $5. a gallon? Whaddya think?

Affect the number of days I ski? Not a chance.

I'm more likely to show up at work less.

Seriously, I think the big losers will be the ski areas as more folks brown bag it to compensate. Even if gas hits $5, I'll save money by brown bagging it and buying a 6 pack for after the drive home.

It amazes me that people panic when gas threatens to hit $5 a gallon yet they've probably spent $5 a drink apres ski without blinking an eye.

This should put it in perspective:

Your Dasani or Aquafina that you're buying at the same gas station where you're complaining about the price of gas works out to $9.60 per gallon! Let's not forget - it's just water...

As far as the price of milk, the retail price is held artificially down. If the farmers got paid what they should, instead of by price supports, like the various dairy compacts, which help pay the farmers just enough so some can remain on the farm, it would be alot higher at the store but that has been a battle raging in Vermont and other milk producing states for years.[/QUOTE]

yeah this is a problem, the price of milk is down. the dairy farmers do way to much and don't make any $. The farmer down the road from me sold all his milking cows last fall, and more and more are doing this.

I pay $2.39 for a gallon of milk at RJ's friendly market in Newport and $2.89 for a gallon of gas

Great point, although I wish my car only used 1/2 gallon of gas a day...

I guess we could all save a lot of $$ by just having a good reusable water bottle and filling it with filtered tap water.

I tend to drink flavored water (Fruit2O or Propel) or coffee (yea I know -- bad bad...).

If I do get bottled water, it's usually out of convenience/laziness, not because I think it's any better than tap water.

Going back on topic, I'm sure that we all could and will find ways to cut out "luxury" items so that we can afford to gas up. I don't plan on changing how often/where I go next season because if the gas does cost more I know I can make up for it elsewhere...it's just a matter of priorities.

NJ, 250 miles each way, do it most weekends. I've pretty much become numb to this ride I do it so much. I joke to my wife that I can probably do it with my eyes closed.

I think higher gas prices will impact my skiing as follows:

1) Same number of trips...but I'll spend the ENTIRE time on slope. First chair to last.

2) I may consider those SkamMarket bus trips.

3) I will car pool on my mid-week escapes and go on the two-fer days.

Also, I imagine some of the distant resorts will consider other marketing ideas (besides two-fer days) like "Car Load" days (doesn't ragged do this?) etc.

I also think I will consider utilizing the lake house...although things would have to get pretty darn critical for me to spend the weekend (*shudder*...or more) with my brother (current lake house tennant). Don't get me started.

A gallon of gas is still cheaper than a gallon of milk. Something's out of whack there...

I don't think gas prices will affect the number of times I go skiing because I love it so much that I won't allow gas to curtail my ski trips. It has affected my decisions about other things that have an indirect impact on skiing.

For instance, I have to get a new (to me) car in July as the lease on our family minivan ends then. My wife and I have 4 children and we all ski. Prior to the recent gas price hikes, I was planning on getting one of the large SUVs in order to hold all 6 of us and to have 4WD for our trips to the mountains. I'm not a big SUV fan but thought it was the best way to go to carry 6 of us and have 4WD. I would love to be able to buy a Subaru or other AWD car but they just don't have the room to carry 6 people plus gear so a larger vehicle is a necessity unfortunately.

We have a condo in the MRV so it is essential that we have 4WD or AWD. Now that gas prices are higher, we're looking at a minivan with AWD instead of a monster SUV. I actually feel better about it since I won't be wasting gas and money and will also affect the environment less.

Higher gas prices have also affected my electricity and heating bills this winter and I'm not real happy about it. Nevertheless, I won't let it affect my ski trips as this is the best stress releaser for me after a long week at work. The only effect may be that I take less day trips in southern Vermont when my condo is rented (although I doubt that too). I've got to ski somehow!!
