No probs at BEast today...aside from you people tracking the marked woods out pretty good over the weekend.

Oh and liftline got a bit scratchy.

But no wind issues. Woo hoo

Wow, the weather this season has been odd... Alternating between really good and really subpar..

Magic was perfect today. Blue skies, no appreciable winds, wonderful snow. Skied until I burned myself out.
Sorry guys. You always get good gusty wind right after a front goes by. word to the wise, look for a place with a fixed grip, low to the ground or out of harms way. Always best to check the wind forecast. Sorry, I know I'm rubbing it in, but it's a good thing to note.

Yeah I figured Red would run. Ironic that Magic has only 1 chair lift, yet this morning it was the ONLY summit lift running in So VT and maybe the entire state! Had family/friends at Bromley. Not a bad day at all with the Bromley sun in full affect. The "3/4" lift ran all day and the Sun Mtn express came online around 1pm. No crowds, ok winds, full sun and rockie mountain packed powder made for a great day. Hoping to hit Magice tomorrow.

That plan doesn't always work. I thought I'd be fine for Mt. Abram

Low to the ground, fixed grip chair at a lower elevation .................check

T-Bar as a back up if it's too windy to run the chair............check

Checked snow report before departing to see if lifts would spin, which indeed said the chair was on hold, but the T-Bar would run..........check

Nothing spun today at Abram. Guess it was that windy up top.

I'm not blaming them at all. I was just REALLY surprised that it was too windy to even operate their T-Bar.

Felt bad for a boy scout troop that was there all the way from Medfield, MA. They got there, many had to go through the rental process only to hang out for an hour and then return the gear and head home. Would have sucked to have been one of those troop leaders.

Agree, there is always an exception. It's not only the wind atop that closes a lift. Sometimes it is because of the direction the wind is hitting the lifts. It's my understanding that if the wind is blowing straight up behind the chair you have a better chance of operating. It also depends on the type of lift and it's layout. What direction is Abram facing?

It appears that Black Mtn of ME was planning to be open today, and they are sheltered from the NW wind. Do you know if that was an option?

Chair line is north-south oriented, can't believe they didn't run the t-bar.

I called them when I got to Abram. Their summit lift was on hold.

I was told the reason the T-Bar did not spin is the lift line is so narrow that some of the branches from the trees were blowing into the lift cables up top. They also said there was significant drifting making the ski track up not passable in certain areas. This was a very rare event for them. Some of the old timers there said they had never seen this situation before.

Bummer for the resorts and all of the people that booked vacations. It's been a really good year for the most part, but holiday periods have been tough. Xmas snow was marginal (ironically excellent a couple of weeks before), first day of MLK weekend was really cold per the thermometer (actually not that bad with the sun) and now two days of cold and wind.

It was an easy choice not to drive up to the Catskills today to deal with the cold and my kids and then everyone driving home from their long weekend.

Not to mention the r!&n on Christmas day and MLS day.

Mountain Creek had the Granite Peak Quad and The Cabriolet Gondola closed yesterday all day. Today they started with The Cabriolet closed, but it opened later. They do have the Vernon Triple to run in place of The Cabriolet, so no terrain closes. On Granite Peak, there is no backup lift, so the entire peak closes.

Techincally Mount Snow had the Bluebird with summit access running about 11AM - first chair?? No, but this morning, yes

Kudo's to Magic!! And frankly for their sake, I hope they have 30 minute lines for the Red the rest of their operating days this season!! They need the $$

That sucks! I do remember some drifting issues near the unloading area of the T-bar in past years. I learned to ski at Mt Abram in the 70's and really love the place. My parent's have a place on North Pond, with a view of the mountain.

It is a great place. I think many folks are foolish for driving right past it to go to Sunday River when the conditions are good at Abram. The place is sublime on a powder day. It has been far too long since I've been. Pre-fire was the last I was there. I'll be back up there this weekend. Snow probably won't be as good as it would've been today, but those are the breaks. If there are any off map trees I should be on the look out for, please send me a PM. I'm only familiar with the on map stuff there.

Keep wanting to hit that place but never pull the trigger.

My friend bailed on me last night when she lokked at the reports.
I chose to sleep in and headed out late. Decided with the holiday I was going for some BC. The truck's gauge reported 1º when I parked it and started the skin track.
The cold was good/bad. I stayed nice and cool (I normally roast skinning). However the hose for my camelback froze solid. I had to take the entire bladder out, disconect the hosr and drink straight from the bladder.
Was a great day!

I had a bunch of friends going up to Jay Peak this weekend but due to the lack of any Facebook posts aside from comments on how cold it was, I'd conclude that they totally got shut out this weekend. Or hopefully had such a great time in the woods to take pictures..... Funny thing is that just last weekend people were commenting on selling too many tickets and long liftlines. Not sure problem this weekend it would seem.
