its strange how they had combined very early on, then it disappeared for many years

Used to be a 2 day affair where the ran the DH on day one, and then had 2 runs of slalom on day 2. In various permutations of the slalom they either used the combined time from both slalom runs or in later forms took the best time of the 2 runs, and then also at one point, the slalom times were essentially "handicapped" like a Nastar handicap essentially to determine the winner.

I like today's version much better. Total combined time, 1 run DH, 1 run slalom, 1 day. Much easier to follow IMHO

Oooh, the SC SL start order is reverse of the SC DH results order. Vonn goes second to last. Crapola conditions. Gonna be tough for the top contenders.

Soft conditions. Any of the top 12 will be in play then (basically anyone within 2 seconds of Lindsey after the DH).

Just remember though, Lindsey has won a WC slalom (the opening race of the '08-'09 season), so while she's amazing at the speed events, she certainly knows how to turn the short sticks and bash some gates too!

I can see that about 4:15/4:30 EST, I'll be glued to the my computer screen :)

Vonn will know before she starts what she needs to do to beat Reisch.

Just calll it a hunch on my part, but I think that the person that Lindsey will need to beat for the Gold, won't be Maria Reisch, but Anja Paerson. Even with her crash yesterday, she's essentially as mentally tough as Lindsey, and she's got a BIG score to settle with that mountain after yesterday

Gonna be a fight

""Yesterday was a long day," Vonn said after her pace-setting downhill run today. "I didn't get as much rest as I wanted." With medals ceremonies at 7pm, and a pushed-ahead start time this morning, Vonn and Mancuso are both going to need to hold the focus for this final part of the Super Combined this afternoon. Vonn expressed concern earlier: "I will just have to step it up in Slalom. My shin is killing me today. By no means is it over, Maria is right on my tail. I don't know if I can hold her back." Riesch's mood seems to be lifting. "I am relieved. At the top I caught my skis and had a little shock but thank God I corrected that. My time is a bit behind, but close enough. I feel good. I was in a bit of a bad mood yesterday afternoon, but by the evening I was good to go." Riesch currently leads the World Cup standings in slalom. Vonn is ranked 15th. Mancuso in unranked."

Based on the early times, and in theory Reisch's slalom ability, Lindsey is probably going to need a run in the 44-44.25 second range - we'll know in about 20 min or so

Man, the Austrians are nowhere this year. They used to go home with a bucket of medals.

Yup, they're both having an off year and are somewhat in a rebuilding mode now, similar to what the swiss were 4 years ago.
