I've already decided I won't be having daughters. Sons only. So, this won't apply to me when I become a parent someday.

I'd rather deal with the stress of a mini - me in the world than a daughter being pursued by a mini - me

My in-laws went to Florida thinking the whole family would follow them down. My wife and Brother-in-law had actually bought property down there. They were stunned when my brother-in-law sold his condo and turned around and bought one in Cottonwood Heights Utah. We sold ours too but for a different reason. My mother-in-law (father-in-law died last spring) can't understand anyone liking cold weather. She always calls when we have a storm up here and is shocked because everyone is happy.

I see twin girls in your future ...

Really depends on the guy. Hopefully he'll be able to keep up with her on the slopes. :D

i think her parents had hopes of a corporate guy with alot of $$$ who wants to live in pennsylvania.
instead they got someone who will work hard to get by and ski and provide for their daughter but live far away and not be rich.

ski bums as a generalization seem to be willing to put their head down and work when they need to. seems admirable to me.

There are things in life that are far more important than money. Enjoy it! The experiences are what matter at the end of the day.

My brother moved to North Carolina and used to always call and gloat about the weather.
Him: how's the weather?
Me: it's been snowing for two weeks now.
Him: It's been in the 70s here, the flowers are out, I'm opening the pool, been in shorts for 2 months now, got a sunburn, blah, blah, blah.

Well after a couple years of that baloney I wised up
Him: How's the weather?
Me: It's been snowin' and man it it awesome. We've been sledding, tobogganing, skiing our brains out, skied waist deep powder, gorgeous sunny days, spectacular photos, traveled to some spectacular mountain tops, kids been ice skating, playing hockey, we built the biggest snowman in town, won a couple ski races, oh man, the maple syrup is flowin, tasty!, the snow tires have been spectacular, I don't get stuck anywhere, always get out, blah, blah, blah.
Him: Oh.

That put the weather gloat in check .

Because I think my girlfriends parents hate me.

edit: actually they love me, they just don't like how skiing is such a big priority to me.

I have all girls. On first thought I was gonna say just don't marry him. But after a couple minutes of further thought, the answer is conditionally yes: as long as he was able to meet me on a powder day and take me to all the good stashes!

Great thread

Mom: You're going skiing again? Do you really need to ski when it's raining? Can't you just learn to enjoy life with one less day?

Dad: Awesome! You really have the bug bad. How was the snow? Did you have to dry off? When's your next ski day?

Is it any wonder they are divorced?

HELL NO! Well, not right now...she's only 4. Since I make my living in the ski industry and spent more than a few years living the ski bum lifestyle before landing full time, year round, benefitted & salaried positions and clawing my way up to the middle class treadmill...I guess it would be highly hypocritical of me to tell her she can't date a ski bum (when she's old enough to date...like 21). Its pretty likely that I'll be opposed to her dating anyone who doesn't ski...or open the door for her...or look me in the eyes when he shakes my hand.

As a former ski bum myself, I do agree with ECPH regarding the lack of benefits and long term security being a concern. I get that money isn't everything. I'm certainly not rolling in it in my corporate world job, but I'm much more capable of being able to provide for my wife now and future children than when I was living in Stowe skiing 80 days a year. Almost every ski bum friend of mine that lives a comfortable life style is able to do so from their trust fund, not by the income they make living that lifestyle.

That was my plan too, didn't turn out that way though. ;)

I don't want to think about my daughter dating anyone right now, so I'm going to refrain from answering the question...
