Would be fun to try - unfortunately probably will never widely take off due to the need for a Jet Ski/ Wave Runner to allow you to catch up to a wave!

Hey at least skiing is not out of reach in CA. Just past San Bernardino (driving distance from San Diego) there is skiing. Other places are quick flights or long weekend drives!
