OK, old guys breaking out their cold stories... One morning over Prez Weekend 1979 I drove by a bank in Rutland and thermometer read -37F. Went skiing with a buddy at Killington and saw a thermometer later during the day there that it warmed to -17. It was sunny and I was age 25. Skied a full day, but I did make a concession and bought a face mask.

After 50 years of skiing primarily in the East, now last 10 years primarily in the Rockies I still have to force myself not to dress as warm for western skiing as eastern skiing. 30 degs out there feels like 45 does back east. I guess it's the dampness East and sunshine West that makes the difference?

PS: growing up in Virginia, everything north of Richmond is Yankee territory :) I always considered NJ, NY and PA to be Northeast. DMV (DE, MD, VA) is it's own thing, but I'd consider those in the mid-Atlantic. I went to U of MD when it was in the Atlantic Coast Conference with Clemson, UNC etc. for southern orientation.
Great job staying out all day at -17. That is very difficult to do! One of the times at Stowe over a MLK weekend it was -30 with the wind chill, Stowe had one chair running on Spruce that day, we did one run then called it. Sitting out on the lift at -30 is brutal. I'd imagine -17 is just about as bad.

The weather definitely feels different out west. It's the less humidity and higher elevation making you closer to the sun I'd guess that makes the difference. 25 degrees in the Rockies definitely does feel 10 to 15 degrees warmer then how the East feels at 25 degrees.

"To foreigners, a Yankee is an American. To Americans, a Yankee is a Northerner. To Northerners, a Yankee is a New Englander. To New Englanders, a Yankee is a Vermonter. And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast."

Has anyone stayed at the Weathervane Hotel in Manchester? Is it good for a night?

Stayed there a couple nights either last season or the one before, pretty sure I commented here.

There were indoor couches set up outside, a car on blocks, and some type of outdoor cooking set up. Haven’t driven by it this year.

I’d stay solo, rooms were clean, but no way with my wife.

yep. stayed their many times. its a shithole but ive stayed in dirtier ones. the family who run it are nice enough.

in general im trying to stay in slightly nicer places. im in a burlington marriot courtyard this weekend. $60 more expensive compared to the white river inn and suites in WRJ. and in WRJ i graduated to the white river inn and suites from the super8, which is the fuckin worst place

Heads up on Super8 and Wyndham. They just started this deal now where you can't cancel online if you need to. The webpage just locks up when you try to cancel online. They are now forcing you to call them and argue with an agent, then their supervisor, as to why you have to cancel and they try to rebook you for different dates even though the terms and conditions say cancel no issues as long as it's 24 hours before. This is the second time I've run into this in the last month and was on the phone for a half hour each time arguing the terms and conditions to cancel.

For my MLK plans...

Looking like Gore Saturday then Whiteface Sunday and Monday. Normally both those mountains are less busy over MLK and haven't been to either yet this season. Probably going to regret Gore as they don't have a ton open but they shouldn't be affected by the wind Saturday where I think a lot of other places will be. Whiteface should be decent as they have quite a bit open and Skyward is opening this weekend.

Was tempted to do Tremblant or Sugarbush and pay to have my base IKON un-blacked out but I suspect both are going to be a zoo especially since they both got a bunch of new snow this week. Also a lot more driving for those vs Gore and Whiteface.

i book thru expedia with a capital one card where i get 7% back on expedia hotel stays, plus the rewards for being in expedia's platinum tier, and only book places that are fully refundable and typically free to reserve. if the wrj s8 has changed policy on expedia, i havent noticed. but ive decided to stay in nicer places anyway.

in general super8s can be fine. they are pretty franchise standardized in the decor and furnishings. but your mileage will vary on individual upkeep. the one in jackson (wyo) is a great place to stay, even for a week. the one in vermont is sad and dingy and depressing.

Agreed on the Jackson Super 8 being great. I stayed at the one in Midvale UT several times before COVID and it was just as nice...good breakfast, very clean, quiet. Went back after COVID and it has been sold and suddenly everything looked like shit, no more breakfast, undesirables passed out in the back parking lot. Now I see that it's not even a Super 8 anymore.

Other ones have been pretty hit and miss for the most part. I stayed at one in Augusta ME on the way to Sugarloaf that was a bit creepy feeling.

I feel like a lot of hotels that used to be decent took a major dive in quality after COVID. Still some that are just as good as they always were, but the ones that aren't REALLY miss the mark these days.
