Thats right I think there is a change I might need some skinnier skis. Depending on what I get for selling a bunch of ski crap laying around the house on ebay. So I'm looking for a ski that will be good in moguls, icy trails , and nasty icy, rock, grassy glades. It needs to be decent on groomers, but it isn't that important. Moguls are more important. So I was thinking something around 75mm in the waste with minimal sidecut, also not too stiff because I'm skinny and will be skiing with AT boots. Don't tell me to demo because a) I know that already, and b) because I can't because of the rubber soles on my boots. Just throw out some skis.

Also it does not need to have any powder skills. Anything over 3 inches I will be on my other skis.

Bro go to the local ski swap and pick up some old model skis. Simple as that. Don't buy new...try something in the Rossi Viper line maybe.....Dynastar verticals if you can find em..I have a pair of Rossi Vipers lying around. They're 201's though :D

Yeah, I was thinking that. But I still want something decent. Is everything crap at those swaps?

Yes. It isn't skinny? :-o

How about a pair of twin tips? I think it's Jim that recommend them in the moguls.

Probably a good idea. I have a pair of line 1260's right now that would be absolutely perfect for what I'm looking for but they are just too darn short. They are 164's + a huge twin tip, so in reality they are probably more like 155's. Maybe I'll try to trade up some how with those.
I have never really got into moguls before. Is it okay to have a really short ski or will it feel terrible?

AWF I think you can find some real GEMS at ski swaps....just make sure they got some base left..and stone grind em...wax em up...and go for it....oculd save you some BIG BUCKS...and the only HUGE difference in old skool straights and today moguls skis is weight and likely slightly more sidecut...but...bump skis are meant to be straight..least for me.. :D

Good luck man...for a young kid..you have quite the quiver..wish I was that lucky when I was your age...

Im still on the hunt for the TRUE "one ski quiver"...ill find it one day.. ;-)

That's what I use...I recommend trying them though, and then buying after demoing if you like them. I use older twin tips with relatively stiff tails. Newer twin tips have very soft tails and as such are not really good in bumps unless your technique is flawless.

So in bumps you want a stiff tail then soft rest of the ski? And what about length?

No, I didn't say stiff tails, but you don't want the tails to be like noodles. Because if you get off balance even a bit, you're in the backseat with soft tails and it's usually unrecoverable. Good bump skis have medium action flex, at least that's what works best for me. You don't want noodles and you don't want GS carver tanks. Look for a wood core.

Modern bump skis do appraoch 75mm underfoot, but they're usually a bit skinnier. Most important, you don't want a ton of sidecut. That'll just make it hard for you to stay in the zipper.

Length? Bump skis run from about 155 to 175 cm for adults. I'm guessing that a 165 will work for you. Check out the new Dynastar Twister. Could be my next ski for this season.

Thanks. My 1260's have a 76mm waist but are only 106mm(i think) in the tip, so they should be good. I'll have to get new bindings to work with my AT boots so I'll probably move the mount back 1-2cm's to make them feel longer.

Is there any reason I will wish I had a longer ski in the moguls?

I don't think so...I'm 6'2" and my current 178's feel just about perfect. With the slightly more generous sidecuts today, I'll probably drop to 175's or so, but the added sidecut might make them feel longer, so I'll be demoing before I buy.

I can't imagine skiing something as short as a 165, but anything is possible with the rapid changes in ski tech. I know you said not to say it, but DEMO.

What size did you used to ski bumps with back before shape skis though Jim?

My bump skis were 203's.

mine were starting at 195 up to 201....amazing how much things have changed...

You used to judge how "good" a skier you were by length of ski...that is certianly no more...

I still buy em too big I think...throwback from the old days..my Salomon GUNS are like 182 or something ....my old model (swallowtail) Dynastar BIGS are like almost 190...HA

Listen buddy, I said I can't demo because I have vibram soles. I guess I could use my old boots, but they are crap, or my dads boots but they are plug boots. I bet a ski will feel a lot different in a pair of plug boots vs. a pair of AT boots. :daffy:

Well, that's why I stepped up to the Garmont Adrenalins with the replaceable soles. DIN soles for demo, buy skis, mount Freerides, switch to rocker soles, voila!

I'm not sure why you are resistant to using your old boots. At least get a feel for the skis before you buy them, unless you're going to do the swap/trash meet thing.
