Yeah, but the point that Steve Wright was making was that there are a significant number of his Canadian customers who are not coming to Jay in protest of the direction of the U.S. The status of the Canadian economy and the CAD is not as relevant to this discussion because Jay charges at par IIRC. If anything, a part of the Canadian economy struggling is all of the trade war B.S. that Trump has started with one of our largest trading partners.

Additionally, I am hearing that Kingdom Trails traffic is WAY down due to a lack of Canadians. I talked to a guy from Whitefish, MT last week and he was also saying that their tourist business, which usually is Canadian traffic, is off.
Also, just between us and the clock on the wall. There is a ton of f'd up stuff going on around the boarder. Drugs, human trafficking, turtle trafficking and the like. Not that long ago, falling ice and rock was a concern, now it's a whole new ball game. Friend has a place in Pittsburg, NH. A couple of years ago he wouldn't let his kids and their friends up there. Too much unknown???

Are the shadow people real? At this point they are...

Too many tourists, not enough tourists. Too much money, not enough CAD. The dollars to strong and it's hard to pay off the national debt.

That's what you get for living in your own intellectual bubble in the name of "doing my own research" and "sticking it to the legacy media".

Maybe the reported lodging lag has a silver lining? In late May/early June I drove 3500 miles in two weeks around the Rockies and then to the East Coast. Just anecdotal results, but I thought motels in general were as cheap as I've seen since before the pandemic. Gas was nice too, below $3.00 in many areas around the country.
Also, whatever slow down may be occurring among foreign visitors to USA, the Asians will pick up the slack. :) I couldn't believe the high ratio of Asians (presumably mostly Chinese) among the tourists at some of the parks I went to like Yellowstone, Bryce Canyon and Monument Valley.

Canadian exchange rate is still within the 70 to 80 cents range that it has been for the past decade.

The very graph you posted literally shows an all-time low for that data series coordinated to precisely the same timed as the reported drop.

That, in concert with the fact the Canadian economy is not currently in a good place, cannot be ignored. It probably also lends a convenient excuse to saying you're not going because of "politics". Like the ugly kid saying he refuses to date Sydney Sweeney because of something she said.

Well my guess is the good Doctor and others who share his views, think Mr Wright is a liar like the legacy mainstream media. He and other businesses could produce the receipts (Steve pretty much did in that article) and they still wouldn't believe that US policy has that great of an impact on Canadian travel choices.

I wouldn't call anyone a liar, and I cant speak for the others intent, but in my case I said "exaggerating".
FYI, when you go to DC to testify on behalf of one of our 2 political parties, the party that invited you has a very, very, very, good idea of exactly what you're going to say, often you have a framework of the questions you'll be asked (just not the exact questions), anticipated topics, you've met with the congressional staffers of the people who invited you and often with some form of prep and/or coaching. They know what they want you to say or at least emphasize. If on background he said, "gosh we havent noticed any drop in tourism whatsoever" - guess what? He wouldn't be invited to DC.

TLDR: This is really quite political.

I guess we will have to wait for some data. Whether it's in line with what Steve says, better or worse, everyone has to admit our tariffs and overall recent diplomacy with Canada certainly hasn't helped tourism businesses; especially the juvenile 51st state insult .

Of course this conversation really won't matter even when the data does come out. Some are always going to minimize the impact of tariffs and juvenile diplomacy. Some will conversely exaggerate those impacts. Whatever it truly is, this situation was entirely unnecessary and preventable.

I have no doubt it's having a negative impact with Canadians, just not the "nobody is coming here nonsense", I think the Canuck economy and USD/CAD have a greater impact. At this moment, economists are completely befuddled as to why Trump's tariffs are not only not greatly increasing inflation, but are barely even noticeable. LEN just reported earnings yesterday, and if anyone, homebuilders should be Ground Zero for tariffs, and they said so far there is literally no impact.

I saw 2 motorcycles on the Maine turnpike Sunday afternoon with Quebec plates heading south. And they were Harleys not making any loud noise.

Most retailers are selling the inventory they have without raising the prices. Once inventory is depleated companies will need to order and puchase at the increased rate. The purchasing people at my company put out monthly reports to our estimating deparment so that we are not getting screwed up and issuing bad quotes. The increases are comming based on what theya re seeing. It just takes time. Also there are literally no ships at the western ports from China. I think the wait and see crowd is going to start the see part very soon.

I agree on the wait and see. Jay business was clearly doing fine up until the end of ski season well after the 51st state and tariff shenanigans were in full force.

Its hard to take lodging projections for a ski area seriously in early June. If it snows those Canadians are going to come. Jay is 10x better than anything else up there. Same with the hockey parents. The Jay setup is a much better than some run down barn in some Eastern Township no one has ever heard of. Stay at some rest stop motel with basic cable and a Tim Hortons next door or the Jay waterpark? Yeah no brainer.
