Skied my first day at Ellen today for the season. Nice conditions overall. Exterminator was skiing really well. I like it this time of year before the bumps get enormous lol.

Headed home tomorrow (would rather go home Wednesday, but I have a Dr appt Wed morning back in NJ). Haven't decided yet whether I'm coming back up after Christmas before New Years. I have a birthday party for my nephew on Sunday, so earliest I could drive back up would be next Monday. We'll see...

"If you can afford a second home then you can afford to pay more in taxes." The state that is 100% driven by a tourist economy trying to bite the hand that feeds it.

Something's gotta give. Pretty impossible to live and work in VT unless you already own a home here and/or are wealthy. I would love to see a middle ground where incentives are given to STR operators to switch their properties to LTR at affordable rent levels. The housing is there in many resort areas, just not for resort workers like in the old ski bum model.

I also believe in unicorns and the Easter bunny...

Didn't this story come up several months ago? Just an absolutely silly idea. Many 2nd homeowners already pay more in taxes simply by virtue of the values of the type of properties many 2nd homeowners have being higher (i.e. slopeside properties, summer homes on lakes, etc). There was a stat in a previous article months ago that mentioned how much taxes out of staters already pay and it was pretty substantial from what I remember.

It's been pointed out ad nauseum but on top of that, non-residents don't have the same drain on resources - schools, utilities, etc. so they're already a higher "profit margin" for the State and respective towns.

As populations in the north east rise, demand for housing rises. This isn't unique to Vermont, it's just compounded by Vermont, understandably, not wanting further development, both in terms of protecting green space and often vertical space (e.g. Burlington's height restrictions).

Before relaxing development requirements or further compounding the resident/non-resident tax disparity, I'd prefer to see a progressive property tax rate and/or utility tax rates, especially for the 8-figure properties that require a massively disproportionate amount of resources per capita (for owners).

Convince me I'm wrong but why should this 14,000 square foot home pay the same tax rate as a townhouse a fraction of it's size and cost? https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/2575-Weeks-Hill-Rd_Stowe_VT_05672_M39186-91147

More government never-can-live-within-its-means. Be it state or federal, have we ever ( in any state blue or red) heard of cut backs or slimming down of public expenses? Individuals, households, businesses small and large, do it all the time when necessary.

Just to add some salt to the wound of those who proffer forever-grow-government-at-any-expense: VT has one of the highest costs per students of any states for public education. Some place it at $29K, others at $27K. Thats close to private school tuition- in many places double private school per student costs. Teachers salary ( for 38 weeks of work btw) is listed around $70K( per NEA) or #17 nationally. Not sure if that includes cost of benefits. So a question an inquiring taxpayer might want to ask " Are we #17 or higher in outcomes?"

'I know, lets just tax the 'rich'.

Glad I am getting close to retirement. If they raise taxes that just might be the motivation to get on with it. Once I do retire we plan to sell our VT place and use the money to buy a 2 month rental in Italy for the skiable future. No know knows when the legs will no longer agree with the brain so sooner is probably better. Either way Europe is really where we want to be.

Always love the anti-tax guys and girls who shit on the teachers salary... nice work asshat. Its definitely the teacher salary that's F'ing the cost of education in VT. You are Nostradamus...

Don't you want educated people teaching your kids? Also VT has a shortage of teachers as well because guess what, THERE'S NOWHERE FOR THEM TO LIVE on the teachers salary!

For the record not a teacher, but this anti-teacher sentiment has always rubbed me the wrong way. Especially now since entitled parents and kids have made the job miserable. Also add in crazy kids shooting up the school to the list. Does your job have to do active shooter drills like schools do now? I bet not...

That's our plan also, if all goes right it will be in place for the 27/28 season.

Same type of people think teachers don’t work over the summer, and are angry that they have to pay taxes for public schools even though they don’t have any kids. As if there is no need for an educated populace. If being a teacher is such easy money … why don’t you do it ?
