a word most humans don't like to talk about.

I embrace it. And I'm about to embark on a very big change.

To those who know me better than from posting here, it is no surprise how unhappy I have been in the past few and especially past year at my job of the last 20 years. I won't go into too many details. I have been stuck here promotion and earnings wise. Something that is like death for someone in sales. What's worse, the company is falling apart and has lost money (after all the usual accounting games) each of the past 12 months. And that takes into account that our sales this year are on target for our sales goal. The wholesale business model this company is built on is crumbling. It has fallen into the buy Chinese trap. We're selling the same products as our competitors in a price only war. Lead paint? Imagine having to recall meat slicers because of lead paint. Think Mattel had it bad? Try explaining to an equipment dealer that he just bought a lead paint time bomb that puts lead in direct contact with food. Expenses are out of control. Bad situation.

On 9/10, the day I came back from my vacation, my boss tells me my position is being eliminated. I guess he was afraid to say he's firing me for more than a few reasons, both legal and otherwise. I asked how a sales company can function without a sales manager and he tells me he wants to eventually groom his son for that position. I wish him well.

I'd be lying if I told you I am not concerned and highly motivated about finding new employment. But my immediate and lasting impression from 9/10 is how relieved and grateful I am that I am out of here. Not that I have any health concerns, but I feel like my health, both physical and mental, has improved in the past 2 weeks. This was confirmed when I went to a doctor's appointment early this week and my doctor commented that my blood pressure had dropped from 120/80 to 110/70. Sometimes it's good to have decisions made for you. All is well here and I feel great.

I have negotiated a severance package that covers all of my expenses through the end of this year. We have savings to last us another 3 months before we would have to consider touching long term savings. I don't anticipate that. I have an excellent lead on a job in Kingston, NY working in direct sales for a food equipment manufacturer...no more wholesalers or middleman companies for this salesperson. My resume impressed the principles so much they called me at home at 7PM only 3 hours after I sent them my resume. There is strong interest not only in my sales skills but there is also talk of a senior management position. Nobody choked or ended the call when I told them my salary. I will get a better job, and I know the value of proving my worth before asking for the big bucks.

Well, that was more detailed than I thought it would be, but you guys deserve to know even if you don't want to. I might be a little MIA in the next few weeks. I'll have alot to do and alot going on. I'm energized and I'm looking forward to the hunt. I'm not ignoring you and I'm not giving up my moderator title. I expect to be back here full time soon and I'll be checking in periodically. So there will be more pot stirring, I assure you. PM me if you would like, I'll get back to you. And Greg has my home e-mail if it's important to contact me.

And BTW, if I post here a little less it means you might have to make more of an effort to come to an AZ outing to talk to me. Because I'll be skiing no matter what!

Good luck with everything Jim. When I was reading severance package I was hoping "enough to get me to the spring" followed. ;-) See you at Hunter this season.

Good luck, make sure you keep that pot stir-er polished so you can jump right in when you're settled in a new job.

Jim will be fine. Anybody that has met him in person knows that.

Nevertheless, best of luck, Jim.

Jimbo will do fine. I only need a day of skiing with him at Cannon (though it was the classic bittery cold and blowing day that binds friendships) to know what kind of guy he is.

I'll raise my glass to your success this weekend, Jim. Here's to another begining, each one better than the last.

Best of luck...just remember that a job hunt is a job and that you need to give yourself time off on occasion.

I'm usually not an optimist, but in my own personal experience job changes usually work out for the better, whether you initiated the move or not.

Not that I think you'll need it, but good luck anyway. Sounds like a positive thing to me, your former company did you a huge favor...

I'll be seeing you at Hunter this year for sure...

You guys get what I'm saying.

Almost like when someone dies, it's usually the people left behind who suffer with grief and unhappiness.

It's been like a morgue around here since the 10th. One of my sales reps quit as soon as I announced I'm leaving. The rest are in shock and unwilling to consider the future here when I'm gone. It ain't pretty.

Wow that has to be flattering to you in a way...but your former sales reps have no chance of being promoted since the Boss's son is moving in...It may bite your former boss in the butt.

Best of luck! Sometimes change is good, sounds like it is in this case.

Years ago in my field, staying in a company for over 10 years was a great sign, nowadays you wonder what is the matter with the person for staying so long.

I have personally confronted this question for the past few years...why am I staying.

Comfortable; enough money.

But now it's become frustrating and unproductive. Going is the best part right now.

I am in the same boat in my current position and am wondering what I am still doing here. The reasons become fewer each day.

Jim, I really applaud your attitude about this and I think it is a great chance for you to spread your wings and find a place to be truly happy. Maybe when you leave and half the staff quits as a result they might get their act together.

I relate...like a slow death.

Attitude is everything.

If you lose your job and think you're screwed, you are.

If you lose your job and decide you'll do better, you will.
