I have to chip in here. Ski in control. Sometimes when your climbing and you hit ice, you have to go where there is snow to get traction, so occasionally you have to go up the middle or cut switchbacks. But I really feel this isn't a huge problem. In most cases I think guys will take lower angle stuff up.
Proof that skiing IS free. I guess there betting of the fact that once you take a run, you'll want a few more.

Magic Carpet Ride is an ideal skin up from the bottom so I doubt uphill skinners will have much difficulty with traction or needing to make switchbacks. I would assume this is the uptrail that the guide/host would take. Though if they let skiers go up on there on, there are a lot of potential bad route choices (Wizard is really narrow and has an occasional icy and steep spot so that would not be a good idea, for example).

There also are some work roads that add some traverses that are generally NG for decent. Knowing the place is important.

Carpet-Mystery-33&1/3-Carpet-Up yours-Carpet would be good, too.

new skins, where to try them first?

Before I venture into the unknown and overgrown, I think I may earn some turns at Magic this year... Can anyone recommend any other places that would be good to earn some early season turns on wider-trails? Also, I'm looking to meet up with folks if they don't want to go it solo....

Look for mountains that are "pre-season" friendly to turn earners. Mad River, Jay, Stowe, and Cannon are some of the usual suspects. Most "backcountry" involve either narrow trails, trees, or open bowl skiing. Not a lot of "wide trail" earned turn skiing once ski areas start opening up.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to jump in here and clear some things up. We are excited to offer the "Touring Tuesdays" program this season. We think touring is a great way to get outdoors and really get a sense of the mountain and surrounding winter environment. I hope that I will see some of you on Tuesday afternoons. To clear up a couple of points;

- The tour up and subsequent run down are free. You only need a lift ticket if you are going to use the lifts before and/or after the tour. There will be a charge for rental/demo equipment. When the information becomes available it will be posted.

- Yours truly will be leading the tours.

- As others have mentioned, midweek days and especially afteroons are pretty slow at Magic. We are not concerned with mixing uphill and downhill traffic.

- We will also be posting touring guidelines at the mountian and website in the near future for guests who choose to tour on other days. Simple things like staying to the sides of trails, use common sense (ie don't tour in a fog), not touring on crowded trails and/or on crowded weekends

- For this season we will be granting complimentary access to anyone willing to earn their turns at Magic regardless of day. So feel free to come up anytime.

- We have a great relationship with the owners of Timberside. As long as we respect their land and use common sense we are welcome to head in that direction.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Think Snow!

I missed this thread first time around. I am going to ask Matt if he'd be willing to do this again at some point next season. I might even be able to get a group together.
