Day 5 today for my daughter this season. She's doing great. We lost the Edgie-Wedgie and she is now making some nice controlled turns (still in a wedge). She actually likes to keep a nice tight turning radius....just like her daddy! :)

You have now burned the worm

She still requests it from time to time. Only used for a random run or two. Like this morning, there was legit ice/death cookies and she was struggling so it gave her enough confidence to make it through that stuff. It will soon be a distance memory, I'm sure. She's on track for 15 days this year!

Outstanding, your life is about to change. My little one went right from the magic carpet to skiing everything on the mountain within about 6 days of skiing....time to chase her down.

Greg, that is a nice shot. Selfish Question: for those of us who don't have kids but are thinking of it - how do you get your 'own' ski time in? Or don't you?

Do you ever leave the kids with the other parent (etc) so you can get some runs in, or do you just have to give up having your own ski time for a few years once you have kids (with you on the slopes)?

Choose the right.....

....spouse.

It's like real estate. Choose the right spouse, choose the right spouse, choose the right spouse.

1st day ever....

....for a very amped two year old. Taken this past X-mas break at Sugarbush.

She was bouncing so hard on the chair I thought she'd bounce right out of my parental paranoia death grip.

She kept yelling "Weeeeee. We're skiing. Sugarbush Vermont".

It is a process

It goes in phases
1.) infant: Parents Tag team. You get to ski, but not with your spouse.
2.) Toddler: Parents tag team + "the my kid started when they were 2" parent dragging the kid out, for the parent's ego before the kid can even hope to ski. ( I did it, I admit it)
3.) Young child (3-6): This is when you buy a ski house and then either: a.) put your child in a seasonal ski program or b.) coach them yourself (requires the patience of Job from you, as they typically don't have peer pressure on them, and try to manipulate you)
4.) Child: (6+) This is the home run. The kids can ski anything, go anywhere and you face your mortality and count the days until a.) Their physical fitness allows them to get to the bottom before you and then b.) Their technique blows yours away

You take turns with your spouse. It's not ideal initially, but it's for such a short time in the grand scheme.

Impressive! I suppose I have no excuse then for holding back our 2.5 year old. LOL! She actually has a pair of incredibly long skis we got at the swap for $10 to just tool around the base on. Haven't managed to get her out on them yet, though, as there's also the 7 month old to care for and we've had very little family time (read=2 parents on duty at the same time) lately.

I've got 15 days of my "own" ski time in so far so I get in plenty of skiing. I don't normally ski the weekends for "myself". Saturdays and Sundays are days I run up with my oldest for a few hours. It really helps having passes at a place close to home. My days come at night or on weekdays when I'll venture further out past Sundown.

My wife isn't as whacky about skiing as me, but she'll get in a few days here and there. We have an almost two year old too. She'll get started at some point next season. Once the kids start skiing more, I'm sure mom will get out more with us. But like the others have said, right now it's take turns.

awesome !

enjoy your days. soon, they want to ski with their friends. not you.

first i started to put my kids on skiis to give them an early start. for them.
as years passed by i realized that it meant a lot more to me. i highly recommend video.
kids don't remember their early days so well like you do and videos are great for them later on.
sometime i find my kids watching their earlier ski days on video on their own. giggling.
priceless.

have fun.

CastleRocks: Spot on for us. We have three, the youngest is 6....she can ski anything anywhere and is fearless. Of course, there are alot of variables that go with this (bathroom stops, cold, need for candy, etc)...but when things are right...it is great.

What it is about!

I started my daughter at age three. She is now 24 and watching her ski makes my heart leap. She spent Christmas to New Year's Eve with me in UT (She flew out from NY) and she and I managed three days together (Alta, Snowbird, and Brighton). She still talks about "all those great ski trips we (I also have two sons) took" when she was younger. We have a thousand memories of good times from those trips. You can't go wrong skiing with your kids. BTW, I used to wait upslope as she skied down to make sure she was OK. Now, I have to chase her to stay with her. It is a blast!

My wife and kids don't like to wake up early on weekends, so I'll often buzz up for 2 hours solo skiing in the morning and then ski with the family later in the day.

We Need Video!!!!!

This was Abby's last day of the season. She was starting to make some pseudo-parallel turns. I think she skied about a dozen days this season including a few with mom and her grandfather at Sugarbush. Lots of fun! Her little sister starts next spring!
