I got to walk a couple sections of the Berlin Wall and check out "Checkpoint Charlie" while in Berlin this week...

Insanely poignant experience for this child of the "cold war"..

Anybody else check it out? It's pretty cool.. Only small sections exist...

Another wild thing about Berlin is many of the old buildings are still riddled with bullet holes - especially near the windows...

I was there when it came down. Crazy few days. Just a few weeks earlier I was at the East German 40th anniversary parade taking pictures of all the military equipment. Everything changed so quickly in 3 months it was crazy. Everyone coming from the east went to two places; 1st the bank to get their 500 marks and then straight to the porn shops. I spent most of the weekend at the refugee camp screening out the prisoners they just let go.

I got to visit West Berlin when I was in High School, and we went on a field trip to East Berlin. Going through Checkpoint Charlie was pretty wild, observing all of the military equipment and soldiers, it was 1985 at the time. Once on the East Berlin side everyone was pretty stunned at how we really moved into a different world.

Isn't it wild that there are still bullet markings and other evidence of war? Many other former Eastern Block countries have similar remnants. First time I went to Poland was in 1980, and in Warsaw and Krakow there are many places where you'll find markings from WW2. Next time I visited was in 1995, and a lot of those markings remained!

Some of the markings and ruins were maintained as a reminder of the war.

Auschwitz yes. Wall, no. Hopefully part of my next European expedition, with any luck. Only a 4 hour drive from Warsaw.

True... But even on private buildings you can see bullet holes.. Some buildings you can see attempts to patch the bullets...
