I am REALY tired so I will try to make this short and sweet.

Randi, O3jeff, my buddy Nelson and I all skied Magic today. It was Jeff and Nelson’s first time there. Randi, Nelson and I all drove up together and arrived around 8:30, Jeff pulled in a few minutes after us. Our first run was a warm up run down Upper Magic Carpet to Up Your Sleeve to Vertigo. The snow was really nice and the sides of the trails were still un-groomed and really fun to blast thru. But the wind was pretty nasty and we were all very cold all day. Our next run was down Trick, to Wand to Lower Red Line. From there Nelson and Randi had to go in the lodge. Jeff and I went up for a run and I convinced Jeff to do Back Line with me. So we took Witch and cut over to Black Line. This was one of my favorite runs of the day. Jeff didn’t seem to like this run very much, but he did great on it. He was a little out of his comfort zone but I never had to wait for him. After that run Jeff and I hit Up Your Sleeve to Vertigo a couple of times. By this time I had found a bunch of small kickers that I was hitting and actually sticking. A couple of them were deceiving and really launched me. By now Jeff and I were really cold and we headed in for a break. A little while later Randi and Nelson came in the lodge, the both of them just having skied Red Line top to bottom and both skiing off one of the cliffs. After a short break we all headed up the hill and headed for Talisman. Jeff decided to ski Wizard and meet us at the bottom. Talisman was by far my favorite run of the day. The entire trail was covered side to side in huge POW bumps and very fun to ski. From there the 3 of us headed into The Hallows for some tree skiing which was also a blast. Randi headed inside for a few minutes to warm up and the 3 guys went up for one more run. This time Nelson and I did Broom to Heart of the Magician. And the 4 of us all meet up at the bottom. We were all a little tired and we did a couple more runs down Up Your Sleeve to Vertigo to recover. The only thing left for me to do was to hit Red Line top to bottom. So Nelson and I took Witch to Red Line and skied it top to bottom at a pretty good pace. The trail was not nearly as hard as it looks……but it was still hard. I only wish I hit the cliff with a little more speed and got some air….next time. After that we were all pretty much spent. We did a few easy runs and decided to call it quits as the cold and wind was really getting to all of us.

Overall I was really happy with my skiing today. I was much more aggressive than I have been in the past at Magic. I was also skiing with more speed. Except for Red Line and Witch, I was letting the skis run all over the hill. I think all the time in the Sundown Bumps are really paying off! It was also a lot of fun skiing with Jeff and Nelson, and both very good skiers.

Tim pretty much summed up the day, great conditions, but very cold. My first time to Magic and wasn't sure what to expect. Their terrain is some of the most challenging I have seen(not that I have been to a lot of places), even their blues had to keep me on my toes. I was way out of my comfort zone and might as well say ability when we went down Black Line, made it down, but I know it wasn't pretty.

I really need to figure out skiing this ungroomed/crud/pow with some kind of consistency on the blues and then carry it over to the blacks. Conditions also gave my legs a good workout(pretty sore this morning too) and by the time we were leaving, the groomed blues all seemed to be chopped up good too making them challenging. I really need to get up north more to break my legs in since after a few runs they were starting to burn! Maybe next time at Sundown I am just going to lap Gunny and see if that helps! The Evils also have me figured out that I am easily talked into doing things as they even got me into an easy tree run which was really a lot of fun.

Great time skiing with the Evils and Nelson, really relaxed group out there for fun. Great first experience there and won't be my last.

Glad to see more and more folks are checking out Magic. If things keep up, the mountains are gonna keep having pow and chopped up pow for you to work with. I know I sure want it. And with these storms being squirrelly this year, more incentive for you guys to head north!

Stop by the ticket office and ask for Matt, he's usually working there. Matt has checked in here several time with updates and info. You may get to meet his newborn babe (this fall) sitting in a car carrier in the office. Start 'em off young at the mountain!

Great TR. Glad you guys had fun. I'm determined to get back to Magic at least once more this year, hopefully a couple more. I usually only end up hitting it once per season.

Nice job trying Blackine Jeff. That trail is no joke. I've seen you ski, and the only thing you lack is confidence, not skill. Surprised you didn't hit Twilight Zone. Despite it being a double black, it's not overly steep.

Not surprised that Randi manned up and hit Redline before Tim tried it...

We also plan on getting back there at least one more time this season. Jeff really looked a lot better than he thinks he did on Black Line (Witch is another story ). He was pretty much right on my tails the entire way down. And I wasn’t skiing slow by any means. The Hallows were also a lot of fun. Still tons of deep untracked POW to be had in there. Next time we will get Jeff in there.

On a humorous note, on the first run of the day I came across a nice jump towards the bottom of Vertigo. There was a large bolder between a couple of large trees that someone turned into a jump. There were no tracks to the jump yet, just a big patch of un-tracked POW. I wanted to hit it, but I also wanted to check out the landing first. So I very slowly skied towards the jump with the intention on riding up the face and scoping the landing. I immediately sunk into at least 24” to 36” of soft POW and fell over on my side. This had to be a snow drift. I stuck my arm straight down into the snow to try and touch hardpack and push myself up. I wasn’t able to reach anything solid (and I have long arms). My next try was to use my poles to help prop me up. I jammed my poles in the snow and they did reach the hard pack. The only problem was that only about 12” of my poles were showing above the snow. My next idea was the roll on my side and do little summersaults for about 4 feet until I reached more solid snow. It took me several minutes to work my way out of the deep stuff and all 3 of my skiing partners had a very good laugh watching. I was out of breath and exhausted after getting out. I eventually did hit that jump on a later run, and the flat landing really sucked!

Neither am I. But I am surprised that Nelson did it.

Yesterday was good. Glad we got out- it's been ages since I've been to Magic last and I really missed the place. Very excited to see how crowded it was (and by crowded, I mean a 5 minute lift line) and hopefully it keeps up. The place is great & always takes care of its patrons. Great vibe, too. I was a bit hesitant about jumping off that cliff on Redline, but a couple of guys on the lift were actually cheering me on which instilled enough courage to take the leap. I reckon at K-zone or similar I would have been enticed to slide down on my ass with chants of "YOU SUCK!" and "LOSER!". That's one of the great things about Magic- the people who ski there recognize how challenging some of the terrain is and embrace you for it. Such a great vibe.

By the way, Timmy... there are two condos for sale, slopeside, at the moment. Just sayin'...

My kids took one look at the landing on that on Sunday and decided not to hit it. The fluffy stuff in the video was pretty packed down by then.

That landing sucked! I got some good air off that jump on my next run and the landing was pretty jarring.

We where there as well on saturday and I skied with my son from 8:30am - 1:30pm and we took in 8 top to bottom runs.

I skied Slide of Hans and Magician for the first time. Slide Of Hans was fun but Magician was really thin with high brush.

The Run of the day was a toss up between Goniff Glade or the soft bumps on Sorcerer.

The mountain was really busy and it's good to see them making some money. Perhaps they can get the Phoenix lift completed before this decade is finished.

Did you ski Magician with your son?

A friend and I were skiing down Broomstick to hit Heart of the Magician and a father and son were just finishing on Magician popping at the top of HoM. This was around 12.

I skied Magician by myself as the thin conditions would be a bit too much for my son to handle. My son skied down Broomstick and waited for me as I skied Magician.
