Nothing embarrassing there, Warp. I think you looked like just about everyone else in the late 70's.

Oh and for those of you who are considering going stache'; Helpful Harlan from the Nate Wilson Group Message board had this to say about it a few months back.

Huzzah and kudos, my good man! It is a fine day when a man decides to transition from beard to stache.

My first advice to you would be to think on what sort of stash you will choose to wear. Since you haven't seen your full face in 8 years, you will want to take a good long look in the mirror. When the time comes, be sure to shave down in stages. I'd recommend a photo at each stage. That way, if you find an earlier, fuller stage was better, you can grow back to it. I'd recommend letting your facial hair get a little long before the shave, so you can shape the stash to the desired fullness, which may be different than it is now with the beard as a counter balance. At first you must leave the chops and stash down to the sides of the chin (wrap-around). Then, you can shave off the chops, then reduce the stache from the chin up until you find your length.

Once you hit your length, proper care and grooming is essential.

Whatever the fullness, you should keep the edges trimmed and neat. Invest in a good cordless electric moustache and beard trimmer if you don't have one. That way you can get an even length throughout the body of the stash. Some small, sharp scissors are also a good idea to keep the edge above the lip tidy. Use your lip as a guide to keep it symmetrical. Never allow the stash to grow over the top lip. This only looks good on Yosemite Sam and homeless people. Trim when the stache is dry, as wet hair relaxes and may confound the trim somewhat.

Shave your face right to the edges of the stash to keep a nice, clean shape and definition. Use a single blade razor, at least at the very edge of the stash, such as below the nose, for accuracy. I'd recommend the Merkur Moustache and Eyebrow Razor, a fine bit of German engineering and affordable. Some of the fancy, disposable, vibrating razors also have a single blade on the back.

Keep the stache clean. Shampoo it at least three times a week, and use a good conditioner daily to keep it supple. After bathing, dry it well, as a damp stash will dry out your lip skin via osmosis and lead to stash dander. Comb with a fine-toothed comb, once after drying, then again when she's fully dry, as the hairs may shift a bit they dry all the way.

Now, depending on the style, this is all you should need to do. Some of the more elaborate staches require wax for shaping. Some of the tremendous staches, such as the Imperial or the Walrus Handlebar must be waxed when you want the full effect. If you keep one of these, you may also want to use a moustache net, also called a snood, to keep the stache fairly tidy while you sleep. This, of course, is very hardcore.

As a bit of throw-back trivia, some VERY hardcore gentlemen in the late 18th and early 19th centuries used to tar their moustache. They would actually comb in hot tar and let that harden, which would keep a nice, black, rock-hard stache for many days, until it started to crack that is.

The only time I really grew out a goattee, my facial hair ended up having a bunch of orange highlights in it???? My noggin is covered with a brown/blonde mix - kind of weird with the facial hair. Plus, it absolutely drove me crazy under my mask that I wear 8 hours a day at work, so as much as wifey liked it, I couldn't get that razor going quick enough when I got through the 2 months she wanted me to try it for!

Stash dander?

That does sound a little involved. I shampoo my facial hair when I wash my hair. If I grow it out I need to comb it a bit after I dry it to get all the hairs in line again. But that's it for facial hair maintenance for me. I hardly ever even trim it.
