As discussed on SkiMRV:

win said:
We had a site visit with the Forest Service and I think we are making progress to add some more at both LP and ME by next season. We will post everyone as soon as we can.

One thing that is really important. There must be no unauthorized trimming or cutting on their land or they will end their permission to ski in the trees. We and they take this very seriously. You may have heard what happened at Jay. By working with our land lords properly we will continue to provide new and exciting opportunities for on map tree skiing.

I'm not so sure adding on map Tree Skiing would have the same affect at drawing skiers to Sugarbush as it does at a place like Jay. It already has arguably the greatest variety of terrain in New England. I would think that like Stowe, those who are big into tree skiing, know where the goods are without a map.

Then again, any acreage they have will reduce Andyzee's bitching about 4000 acres

Not a big fan of the trend of adding glades to maps. Tends to bring folks in who can't hack it.

The explicit prohibition of maintenance is kind of a bummer as well.

it's fine as long as they don't do what k did and just take some known 'stashes', clean them up and put them on the map. if they open up totally new glades i say go for it particularly if they're gonna crack down on locals w/ saws.

the only glades that should be marked are "gaper glades"... Everything else should be local knowledge.

And I'm sorry, but there is no way in hell that Murphy's can be considered a glade any longer. I picked up a free rag on Northeastern Skiing last year, and they ran an article on the best glades in New England. For Sugarbush, intermediates, they suggested Murphy's. It was at that point that I put the magazine down, recycled it the next day, and vowed not to read it again because the person who wrote that article clearly had never been to Sugarbush let alone done enough research to know that Murphy's is no longer a glade per se and has not been for maybe 25 years or so!

all new terrain is good terrain. unless it's a super-wide "super" trail, but that's not the case with gladed terrain. so, i vote for "it's allllllll good".

Actually, I take this back. I think they should load up the North map with glades making it more popular than South such that people will demand it's return as the spring skiing spot.

Super wide trails are cool to deal with the masses or to practice Super G turns..and also for a western feel..imagine if all the trees at Sugarbush were cut and it was one giant bowl...JEA!!!!

+ 1.

Ain't gonna happen until there is a "Clay Brook II" at Ellen that has more owners that LP side. The harsh reality is that the LP landowners are paying a premium to have slopeside access.

That said, I do recall seeing or hearing of plans to locate a conference center/hotel complex at the base of Ellen because they have a clean slate over there to work with and because that side is currently underdeveloped and could be more "exclusive."

Now if they just extend to the true summit above Inverness, I'll quit my job, move to Fayston and become a liftie :daffy:

My guess is that any new "on map" glades will be low angle tree runs that are already well known and obvious. I would not expect permission from the Forest Service, nor do I think management would want to put a lot of other lines on a map.

Until they clear cut the place, or anywhere for that matter, there will always be "stashes" to be found.
