Texas based Bearfire Resort is using Snowflex, a polymer-based snow substitute, to cover its ski trails.

Doesn't look like they've made any progress in the last 2 years.

From their website's press release in April 2007:
Several key elements related to design and funding now in place, Bearfire Group expects to be in a position make an announcement regarding the resort’s new grand opening date in the next few months.

No further press releases after that.

:???:

I stand by my original comment that it would be cool for there to be options in an area where skiing is not otherwise widely available.

skiing is not otherwise widely available.

Or available period. I presume that the idea of this is about far more than skiing. They could spend a lot less money and put in an artificial slope without the faux mountain and grandiose hotel complex...

It is Texas though. Isn't everything bigger in Texas?

I imagine one of the appeals is the atmosphere/setting itself. Would make one feel like s/he is getting away even though it's only a drive down the street.

Other than hopeless, desperate transplants from up north, I know very few natives who would find this appealing. I certainly can't imagine someone flying in from elsewhere to ski, since once you've boarded a plane, point it north! My boss lives in Houston, skis once a year for 1 week in the Rockies, that's her whole season.

I imagine it's geared toward Texans themselves; you're right in that I can't imagine anyone flying there explicitly for that. I'm not familiar with Texas at all but if it was projected to be near an area where there's a lot of business travel, maybe they were hoping for some of them as well...for the novelty factor.

My daughter lives in Dallas. I have been down several times. I was surprised how many Texans were into skiing. As Bill said, they usually only ski one or two weeks a year taking trips to Colorado. I think it would be a big hit down there. There are plenty of people in North Texas to support it. You also got Oklahomans less than an hour from the border. I would definitely give it a whirl on a trip down there, do the golf and ski in one day thing.

Ski Dubai

Not practical to us here in the USA, but interesting nonetheless:
Dubai (in the United Arab Emirates) has an indoor ski area called Ski Dubai. Dubai is in the desert, so it pretty much has to be indoors in order for it to work. It was featured a few weeks ago on The Amazing Race.

There are at least 30 successful ski domes now in operation globally and most are not built in a desert. The only loser so far is the project in Jersey which has nothing to do with the ski/rider market but the financing. The super ugly paint job isn't helping as the project's success/failure is about more than just the indoor ski hill facility.
