I guess no early opening for Stowe. Seems to be cutting it close to me, but then what do I know about lift maintenance!

Good point....shows how much I know!! Now that you say that I do remember that the gondola usually isn't early and late season skiing there any way.

No worries. I didn't mean to discredit you at all. I also think that the issue is moot since they are starting work now and will have it done in 2-3 weeks, which puts them into early November. Stowe traditionally opens the same weekend as Sugarbush does now, which is the weekend prior to Thanksgiving, so I don't think it is an issue.

it seems these resorts are waiting until late in the "off season" to do these repairs / maintenance / upgrades.

Killington just started the work on the Super Pipe expansion no all that long ago. Perhaps this is the only time that the gondola is offline?

Most of the time when it seems like a resort is waiting until "the last minute" to start a project it has more to do with the increase in staff sizes that happen in the few weeks before the season starts when compared to what is often the skeleton crew that is on the payroll during the summer. And if a resort has "offseason" operations such as scenic lift rides/mountain biking/etc that comes into play also, especially if it's a project where they know it can be completed after Columbus Day weekend but before Thanksgiving week

that makes sense. I suppose there is the approval process as well. As an engineer, I know how long it can take to get an earth moving permit.

In Stowe's case, I guess it really doesn't take that long to install a new haul rope.

Stowe to rewire gondola

Stowe, Vermont - October 18, 2010
Ski and snow boarding season is just a short ride away. And for Stowe Mountain Resort, that means preparing the mountain and the gondola.
After 15 years, the cable of the gondola is being replaced. "All lifts are monitored annually and it really depends on wear and tear on the lift. The gondola a little more often than a regular lift, only because it runs almost 12 months out of the year," said Michael Colbourn, Vice President of Marketing at Stowe.

:dunce:

Yes we know because that is the story that I mentioned at the beginning and cited to. What is your point?

He started a new thread, instead of closing it with a link to this one I just merged them and left the redirect from his thread to this one. Sorry for the confusion...

Got it. Thanks Brian.

Sorry Mr. Speedee, I'm just too slow for you. Reading every new thread that comes out is too hard for me. Feel free to dis me at will!

Yes sir. May I please have another?!

The thread has been up since 8:11 am this morning, six hours before yours. It's always a good idea to scan the boards before posting something just to be sure that you aren't being redundant. Not dissing, just suggesting.

Don't usually have the time or patience to look through them all; Besides, this thing called work gets in the way. I thought that's what mods did. Anyways, I'm not here to follow every thread on this board, nor do I understand that to be a prerequisite to participation, nor did I think there was a competition going on here. It would be much simpler to add me to your 'ignore list'.

I guess the Globe was right, empathy is dead.

The Super Pipe is at Bear, which doesn't typically open until around Christmas. It's going to be more of an issue with getting it done before the ground freezes than before they need to worry about skiers. Plus all that entails is moving dirt around.

Bill, again, not dissing, just suggesting that if you find something it is a good idea to scan the main page before posting something. There's no need to be defensive. Sorry that you are getting that impression.

I would think that with the Dew Tour coming mid January, that they'd at the absolute latest want to have all the dirt work done by early December, since even under ideal snowmaking conditions it's still likely going to take a minimum of 10 days of snowmaking to get enough product to construct the pipe, and having seen them do that for The Dew Tour at Mount Snow the last 2 years, the folks from Snowpark Technologies show up and start building it about a week before the comp begins. I wouldn't be suprised at all if you see the Dew Tour Competiton trails at Bear starting to get some snowmaking attention before Thanksgiving to ensure that they'll have enough snow, even if mother nature heaven forbid gives us an extended warm spell in December/Janaury
