I dig bumps. I blame this forum on me hitting bump runs as often as I can.

after watching that, Iceman admitted to me that he looks at the 1st bump. He's gonna have to work on that.

That surprises me that he can ski as well as he does without looking ahead. It's a fundamental part of learning to ski bumps, and something I forgot about apparently. I noticed last week at Okemo I was looking at my skis a lot. Probably had something to do with the lines on Sel's being so regular that some of the thinking was taking out of it. I started to look ahead and immediately was skiing better and faster.

I really need to work on arm/hand position. I can never get it right.

I'm not really interested in competing either, mainly because I know more often than not, I'll get smoked. Doing the Sundown comps is helpful though in that it confirms or denies whether I'm getting better or not, especially as the talent in that field has improved so much over the years. Just qualifying is now an accomplishment.

I don't think ego and confidence go hand in hand. I do believe there is a certain bit of a "showing off" aspect in skiing bumps though.

I have seen an absorption course with the bumps before on the seeded bumps lift side of OL. I never knew what it was for and just realized.

Although years apart, this video, mogul logics video and Smart mogul skiing's video all say basically the same thing. The more things change, the more they stay the same I guess.
Mondeo, Smart predominatey uses the lookers right of the showcase t-bar for mogul training these days?

Last year was my first, but for the kids' camps they needed the rest of the space for freeride. Which was kinda nice, their course was super rutted and beat up by the time we got there and got brand new lanes.

Ha. I've been telling him that for some time now. Glad he see's what i'm saying

And based on what they said about that, it might be the cause of his head bobbing... I'm trying to get him to the 2 week camp at Whister. Hopefully Matt will work on that.

Those lines arent catted either. They are skied in. That's the gig i want. Show up for a few days and ski in a course so it looks like that!
Lookers left of the showcase is slightly steeper than the right, but the right goes longer. Whistler camps friggin rule!

various camps have setup rollers to make this course, below is one from Smart's camp, I have seen rollers from a Mogul Logic vid. They use this for drills that will let you focus on specific techniques.

good stuff

btw, its great to see this from the Canadian freestyle team.

Just think about it Hannah wins Olympic gold and has pretty much been dominating the WC circuit for this two year stretch.... yet the US freestyle team nor the US ski team did anything like what the Canadian did to make a vid about freestyle skiing.

And yes, the US market is so enamor by the spandex warriors, it just makes me feel good that others country's like Canada, France, Sweden and Japan still thinks the world of mogul skiing....

ok.... end of rant

How do you control your speed when it really starts picking up? I end up losing control and my skis get away from me. Do you just "hit" the bumps harder or push into them more?

from that vid.... several things come to mind

1. You see the boot setup of the skier on the segment about skiing on the flats? he had alot of forward lean on those boots. This coupled with shin pressure or leaning on the shins ensures you use the front of the ski to make your turns.

2. Look at Kristy Richard's vid segment, she skied a wide and a narrow line down the course. Look at the approach of her wide line, she pointed the skis more east/west than her narrow line. To control her speed, she had to anticipate this three or four turns ahead.

3. Absorption, this put pressure on the front of the ski by being forward w/ the body, if you can absorb with the knees, then it means you're not in the backseat... thus the skis will not "jet out" in front of you. In addition, the act of absorbing moves the center of mass lower and slows the the ski's velocity. If you believe that "pumping a bike" to get velocity does exist, thinks of this as the reverse of that action. Also putting the front pressure on the ski when absorbing slows down the ski velocity too. Some will say front pressure helps more than lower the center of mass or the other way around.... imo both will control speed.

hope that helps

Absorb more or take a wider line. On flat bumps, I'll basically go straight, all speed control is through absorption. As they get steeper, the tips get pointed further and further away from the middle of the line; this makes the moguls effectively larger, so you have more asorption, and puts turning into the mix as a means of speed control. Beyond that, I start skidding and doing other nasty things to compensate for lack of ability.
