WASHINGTON - Several people were arrested Saturday afternoon at the Jefferson Memorial, protesting the recent court decision that upheld a ban on dancing at the memorial.

In April 2008, a group of less than 20 young people came to the memorial as part of a flash mob where they would dance to music played through their headphones.

U.S. Park Police then told the dancers to leave, and eventually arrested one woman on misdemeanor charges, Mary Oberwetter.

the action by the police is deplorable

but at the same time, why is it entirely necessary for these folks to be able to have their flash dances at the Jefferson Memorial?

There are plenty of civil rights I'm willing to stand up and defend. The right to have a group dance at a National Monument ain't one of them.

I have to wonder, why is it entirely necessary that they not have a flash dance at the Jefferson Memorial?

While I agree in the grand scheme of things dancing at a monument may be minor, what's next? Before you know it it'll be a whole town, and then Kevin Bacon will get involved, and we all know how that plays out.

Indeed Footloose is upon us.

I guess I just feel that if there's a law written that is stupid, the proper way of going about changing it is to contact your local representative. Taunting the police who have nothing to do with the writing of laws is pretty lame in my book. I'm not defending the brutal action of the police in this instance in saying that.

The protest was for freedom of expression, not for the right to have a group dance, in response to a recent law that bans it from Washington memorials. Dancing was one of forms of freedom of expression they chose to use, kissing got a couple arrested in the first part of the vid. I suppose you would also be arrested if you whistled the National Anthem.

This.

I am 100% behind freedom. But what is the point of dancing at a memorial? Good grief! Of ALL the important and noble causes these turds could try to defend or make a point about, they choose civil disobedience over dancing and making out at the Jefferson Memorial? That is pretty lame. People go to Washington DC to see the memorials and often show great reverence and deep thought at such places. I am 100% okay with tossing disruptive citizens out of memorials. Folks can get a permit if they want to throw a party at a memorial. Would there be similar outrage if a group of Islamists starting praying at the memorial? I bet more people would be in favor of tossing them in jail. I would be in no more in favor nor against. Disruptions at public monuments or memorials that negatively effect other citizens enjoyment should be handled.

And this is the opinion of someone very much in favor of personal freedom. But your freedom ends at the tip of my nose.

Thank goodness that people of your mindset weren't calling the shots so many years ago when Dr. Martin King told assembled thousands at the Lincoln Memorial about a dream that he had.

I watched the videos....I didn't see any "disruptions" anywhere. That couple was quietly embracing and kissing....I wouldn't even call what they were doing "dancing". It's a disgrace that people can get arrested for that in the United States of America.

Yeah, this seems like something in Nazi Germany. Hitler must be running the place.
