I know someone mentioned Snowshoe in the thread about Sugar and I have heard some rumors that they might open. But nothing concrete. Please post any news about opening here. I'm seriously considering heading west if they do open. But obviously need to know for sure.

This was taken yesterday, reports say they have over 2 feet of snow, enough to open. The balls in their court

Yup. Saw that. They were also setting up snowguns. They obviously have more than enough to open. You're right. Their move. Hope they open.

The only issue I bet they are debating is if they will get enough business. From WV and NW Virginia for sure, but I think everyone else on the East Coast will be trying to recover from Sandy and not have skiing on their mind.

I'd be down for a road trip if they open their steep terrain pod (the one with the two trails) and don't groom (assuming it doesn't mank up, in which case all bets are off). Don't know if I'd waste 30 hours round trip for a WROD if they only open something they blow snow on and groom... especially with natural all over the place. But who knows how that snow will hold out depending on temps...

I'm from the Hudson Valley and I'm also up for a road trip.

BTW, Riv...if they open and you do decide to drive down, let me know. Perhaps we can hook up.

Sorry for the lack of posts today, but as you can imagine with over 2 feet of snow in the past day and a half we have been dealing with power outages as well as phone and internet issues here at 4848. We know the big question on everyone's mind is, "When is Snowshoe going to open, Is Snowshoe going to open on Wednesday?!" To answer the second half of the question first… No Snowshoe will NOT be opening Wednesday. As far as the first part of the question… We will be answering that tomorrow so stay tuned and find out! In the meantime here is some video from today to help pass the time between now and then… http://youtu.be/nJPb1x47D3Y

That's from facebook so maybe. If they are open Friday I'm skipping class and heading over, almost decided to make the drive down to sugar but I really cant miss tomorrow, stupid test. This is what I get for leaving my ski gear back home.

I haven't heard from any of the locals in Canaan Valley, WV (~1.5 hours north of Snowshoe) most of today. I think they are having some real serious power, road and tree issues in West Virginia. Snowshoe couldn't open before Thursday, and I guarantee they won't have enough open to justify the trip down from the Northeast (I live near DC.) Even with poaching, which you'd have to hit real early and hope ski patrol won't catch ya. Snowshoe has a very restrictive off-piste policy, but with the rest of life, that depends upon whether they catch you or not. This early, I seriously doubt they'd have the Western Territory (the 1500 vertical side) open because the paying $$ wouldn't justify it.

Sorta weird, since Snowshoe is getting all this publicity courtesy of the weather channel, and they may not even open with the dump. They cater mostly to the Southeast (NC, SC, GA, TN, KY, etc.), Ohio, and a bit from the DC area. Not the best ski culture down there.

You guys contemplating a road trip to Snowshoe from NH have lost your minds. For near the same money and far less time to get there, you could be on a plane to Colorado to ski Abasin and Loveland. Granted they didn't get a few feet of snow in Colorado, but the terrain would be far better.

If Snowshoe opens, they won't be opening the expert terrain off the Western Territory. They rarely open that terrain until Xmas week, even if they have the snow to open it. They'll open some trails off the Ball Hooter lift. So, you're talking taking a 16 hour car ride (maybe longer if there's road closures) to ski 800 vertical feet of low intermediate terrain that's too flat for all but 2-300 vert to even enjoy deep snow.

Looks like Timberline is where it is at. Matt and Pat have a few pics up on Harvey Road. A little closer than Snowshoe, decent pitch, not upside down, and less likely to get the boot vs a major resort. I think it would be worth it for the sheer adventure. How often do you get to ski WV in October on 3' of natural? Earning it all the way, way pay out the ass for airfare and lift tickets when you can have a unique and novel earned turn experience with some friends. It isn't out of your mind, it is simply a different way of looking at things than your perspective.

I agree, they'll remember "skiing Sandy" for the rest of their lives. It's not every day you get to ski a hurricane. Sounds like a great ski adventure to me.

Hell, if my boss weren't off the rest of the week, I'd be tempted to head down myself. Can't wait to live it vicariously through their TR. Kudos to Pat for keeping the streak alive...barely. Happy Halloween!
