Divorce.
So the author's husband proposed on a chair at Vail while she pretended to like skiing and then she quit as soon as they were married. What a bitch.
While your comment is rather cynical, if you look at the stats, many women bail on the sport for good once the kids stop skiing with mom and dad. Of course during the early years of child-rearing, both parents are apt to stay home. The stats bear this out. After age 45-50, the number of men "returning" to the sport vastly outnumber the women of the same age.So the author's husband proposed on a chair at Vail while she pretended to like skiing and then she quit as soon as they were married.
They stop doing a lot of things you like once you marry them.

My wife does still ski...
My first marriage - had wife that did not ski! I went several times without her which only bit me in the ass later. I then decided to stop which was wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!! We had a child and once he was three I put him in lessons much to her dislike. This is when I realized that I need to step up - and I did! Started skiing again with my son without here and we had fun! Two years later- divorce (much more complicated than just skiing)!
Remarried a couple years later - my wife did not ski when we first met! I was skiing with her boys and my son while she sat in the lodge reading a book. She knew that I loved to ski so took it upon herself to commit by buying gear. We started off by skiing green trails and I would coach her. Eventually, she stepped it up and skied increasingly difficult terrain. Today, she skis mid-fats with stiff boots and will ski most black trails and glades and obviously anything below that - does not like bumps! On blue and greens she will let it all out and kills all the other women on either sides of our families. Her next challenge is to do some 360 butters and learn to ski backwards just for fun.
Oh and according to stats that indicate that the wife stops once the kids are out of the house - that will not be the case here! We already are practicing what that is like by getting away on our own a few times. We have plans to ski Chile and Japan once the kids are on their own.
