My wife and I will be skiing both of these areas for the first time feb 8/9/10.

She is a novice coming off a compound fracture of the ankle ( screws , metal plate etc) late last season . I ski it all blacks /blues and have been out many times this yr. I will try to get her out before the trip but may not do so --------------------------SO

I'm concerned that since this will be her first time back on skis since the injury that these areas have enough greens and gentle blues . She is in fantastic shape @ 5'4" 110lbs , got thru PT in record time, plays competitive tennis weekly yr round , walks 3 -5 miles a day yr round , golfs etc and was a XC skier for yrs

But at 63 i want her "comfortable" the first couple of days out ---so what trails do you advise she ski at teh Cat and Jiminy . I looked at their trail maps but your experience is better

I haven't been to Catamount in a few years when I was there a few times with my wife in her first year skiing. Being a pretty timid skier, especially early in her skiing career (when we were at Catamount) she really enjoyed starting with the terrain off of the Meadows chair. I think it was a double then but it looks like a triple now. We started getting off at the mid-station and skiing either left or right from there, both take you down pretty gentle greens. I think she preferred going to the right more. Eventually I was able to get her to the top of that lift for some blues that have a bit more pitch but are still pretty comfortable. It looks like there is a green from the top of that lift now too which I don't remember being there at the time so I can't comment there. By the end of the day we were heading up to the summit and going down Ridge Run which is marked as a blue, but is really pretty mellow it does have a funky double fall line to it though. The only problem with this option is that it brings you back over to the meadow chair which is a bit of a skate across the base area back to the summit chair. There are a couple of other blues from the top, but I don't really remember too much about them.

I've never been to Jiminy...

I have a pass to the Cat. Unfortunately the two times I've been there this season they only had 6 trails open. I think Brian's assessment of the Cat is accurate. The Meadows is a great learning area with mostly greens and a couple of blues. This area is separate from the main ski area. If you want to break off from the wife for a few runs, Upper and Lower Glade is a nice run. If they ever get Catapult open, you can enjoy the steepest run on the mtn. I've never skied Jericho at Jiminy but I would guess that Catapult is close to if not a bit less steep than Jericho. Greg would probably be able to confirm or deny that. I've only skied Jiminy twice. I enjoyed it. The base area is more developed and has some nice dining options.

I'm not sure which day you were considering hitting the Cat. But they have $15 lift tickets Mon - Thurs. I'm not sure about Fridays. It may be $15 also.

The assessments of Catamount are accurate. Jiminy has abundant beginner terrain as well. West Way and Left Bank are both long beginner trails that rap around either side of the mountain and both converge at the base. There are several intermediate trails and a few steep runs for you. You'll be in the area on a Thursday - Saturday. Might want to ski Jiminy on the weekdays and Catamount on the Saturday. You're in Great Barrington? Don't forget Butternut (right in town) for a ton of gentle cruising terrain, good snowmaking/grooming. Hope this helps.

And don't forget, working on your human slalom skills. Working-up a TR for Nutterbutter from this past Sat. It was way over-crowded....

Yeah, its tame compared to the other two, and it can get pretty crowded ( as I see you've noticed my glowing report:smile: ) However, on a quiet day, it is a great little place especially for novices. And the terrrain, while rather mild, can be interesting and fun.

I certainly wouldn't expect it until the middle of next week. Supposed to get really cold after the weekend though so snowmaking should continue to be good.
