Wow. I just noticed this. I guess the political discussion this election year got too wild, eh? Thanks to everyone for keeping things civil here for the most part.

Yes, I noticed it on Wednesday and posted it here.

On Wednesday, the threads were there except the offending one. When I returned yesterday, all the threads were removed. This wasn't about a heated political discussion, it turned into a terrible flame that exploded to verbal hatred. I couldn't believe what I read. Nor could the others.

Dave M. and others tried to warn the parties to no avail. Instead of the parties envolved being barred from the boards Rose et al removed the catergory. As this wasn't the first time words got way nasty.

That board, as well as this one, is meant to predominantly be a friendly discussion of the great outdoors. We do side track for sports, politics, etc and I agree that we've seldom been less than courteous to each other.

Actually, Rose isn't there anymore, there's a new moderator. The AMC was looking at how many resources it was taking to keep the forum functional, clean, and productive and decided that it wasn't worth the effort. If things degenerate in the other forums they'll probably close down the BBS.

Presidential politics wasn't the problem. It wasn't even the poster who may or may not have been a troll. What killed the forum were the regular users who refused to accept that the proper way of dealing with offensive posts was to contact the moderator and wait until they dealt with the situation. Instead they responded with off-topic and unsavory attacks, bring the level of discourse down to a base level that was simply unacceptable. That's what killed M&M and may end up killing the entire BBS before too long.

Hear, hear - let's continure to keep it positive on AZ......

While there has been some political disagreement here recently, it hasn't been too bad. It's interesting to see the mix of ideas. Issues have been brought up that I might not have thought of, and hopefully I have done so for others. Guess it's to be expected a few weeks away from a close presidential election. Maybe American voters aren't as apathetic as reported. Or maybe skiers/riders/hikers are just better people - ??

No...we're still plenty apathetic. Why would we have reason to be otherwise? Crummy politicians have been around since before the Red Sox last won the World Series!

And no, don't expect "Fenway Karma" to rub off on the politicos in the near future either. :-?

For many beginner hikers, the Hiker Journal and M+M boards were places you could go to glean information from veterans and maybe find some new ideas about hikes and equipment. Eventually people do branch off that site and go to other places like Alpinezone and Views from the Top and that have a more community enviroment. Both Greg and Darren do a great service to these groups and I would not have been able to meet some great hiking companions without it.
The M+M board was always a crazy place and it will be missed. People have a right to their opinion and a well-moderated topic often lets people see other persons points of view more clearly. This was the death knell for that board.

'Tis a darn shame that the AMC had to close it down, but I must say I won't miss it since I stopped visiting that place for 6 months now. AZ is a much more civil place where I feel right at home. Kudos to Greg and the other moderators for promoting and maintaining such an atmosphere.

I think people need to remember that no matter who gets elected, this country will not implode, judgement day will not come Nov. 3, 2004, and everything will be okay. If electing one person to a position had such drastic consequences, this country would not have survived 200+ years.

I agree with Mt. Magic: Let's go hiking!

Views used to have a climbing board that catered to climbing/mountaineering all over the world, mostly US but a fair amount of Mexico, SA & Europe was mentioned. When that board caught aflame, it was real bad too, IMO worse than what I read on M&M. I did not catch the thread that was the final straw on M&M but hatred really has no place in any media, TV, web, press, radio....

Due to time, cost, bandwidth etc., Darren had to let it go. I believe Rec.climbing is still being run by someone though. I seldom ever get there, like Darren, I'm pretty rooted in the NE, however when it was just one click away & some familar faces & names were there, it was nic to stop by.

Hello People,
:D Just want to come on board to say hi this being my first post here (long time reader). I post over on the AMC site under StrollingTramper but I shortened here. The removal of M&M from the AMC is why I'm here. I like educated political sparring so I’ll miss the M&M. I was not happy with some of the flaming that did go on there because it did become very personal at some people. All of you pretty much summed up what I feel about the whole thing. I enjoy hiking and backwoods camping and the kids (all out of the house now) have come to love it also. I like living in a country where we can take an active part to keep the backcountry country. Within an open form like this one and the old M&M keep/kept ideas alive in how best to accomplish what is needed.

Enough said, I don’t want to get winded on my first post here.
