Been watching this thread, it's getting silly. In fact, it started out a bit silly with what I believe was a tongue in cheek remark about Americans and skiing. Time to let it go folks, unless you like the probable fact that mrlossyman is sitting back and getting a good laugh regarding his handiwork.

I've been skiing all over America and the world. I've been in Germany, Austria, France, and Switzerland. Some of the folks in Europe are indeed the rudest I've ever encountered, but most are just your run of the mill people. Alot were very good to us, and a few are still friends. As usual, the a**holes seem to stick out more as time passes.

Pretty much the same in America...most folks are just out for fun, a few are a pain. Some are always on time, some are late.

What does this have to do with skiing?

it has nothing to do with skiing we;re all having a little fun with our friend lossyman :D

i'm done with it tho... you're right... kinda a waste of bandwidth.

Wow,

Lots of good replies! Chamonix is great for skiing with lots of Reds and Blacks but the bus service between mountains is shocking. It was great to get over to Italy just to try another resort! Coy is very nice, it was a great day of mid weeks skiing which was needed after Chamonix.

I don't judge all Americans the same, it was just so funny that we ended on a bus full of you American folks! Come on, if you are taking the trouble to travel 3000 miles to Europe then make the most of it! If you want to go to little italian towns for coffee then go in the Summer!!!!

Next year I am off to Sauze D'loux and Verbier which should be great. The following year I am defo heading state side or Canada! Just hope all you guys don't wear Spyder (I have a couple of Spyder mid layers  )!

It was cool to get a discussion going! Oh one other thing, I think there was a bit of interbreeding going on the bus between cousins etc, there was a few Spears lookalikes too (not bad)..

I am off to China next week, anyone know of any skiing there?

An observation:
In my European skiing experiences, there were an awful lot of people who hit the mountain at 10:30 and who were in a mid-mountain canvas chair by noon doing sunbathing, alcohol consumption, and a lengthy lunch all afternoon. They weren't Americans. Typically, they were Brits. They also looked like they were having a really good and relaxing time.

I don't know about anybody else here but to me, skiing isn't a contest. It's a recreational activity. I'm all about quality, not quantity. I scratch my head at people who count runs or keep a scorecard from their altimeter watch.

If I'm at a resort in a foreign country where I have limited language skills, 10 Euros in my pocket, and a scheduled departure, I'm likely to show up a half-hour early to avoid the stress of having something go wrong. I have plenty of stress in my everyday work life. Why carry it along with me to the ski slopes?

Geoff, you've put it in a nutshell. I noticed the same thing about the canvas chair animals...many liked to "reserve" their places early and I witnessed more than a few altercations over those chairs. Ridiculous!

I sort of think you guys took a lighthearted desciption of my experience being on a bus full of American skiers as personal, which it wasn't meant...

Come on, I come from a country where our greatest skiing success was Eddie the Eagle, ski jumper....

I am sure we all have funny experiences with our foreign counterparts, I do, my girlfriend is Swedish and you may think wow, cool, but she might as well be from Iraq because she is so different to British girls!

Don't take this personally, I don't count my runs nor keep a score card... I simply enjoy the sport just like everyone else,,, sometimes though, you must laugh at others expense.........

Does that mean

1) your wife is Scandanvian?
2) you are?

Now as I don't think i have ever met a Scandanavian guy with a non Scandanavian girl I'd say it must be option 1!

At least the messages are not so bitchy now :dunce:

(not to make this thread about NE Skiing, but..)

I would imagine that the way the dollar is, you'd get quite a bargan.

Stay slopeside at Sugarbush or Killington.

You'll have to let us know how and Where you ski though....

Worst advice evarrr!

From London, I'd fly to Calgary or Vancouver. The great circle route is your friend. From Calgary, you've got Banff, Lake Louise, & Sunshine within 90 minutes. Go a little farther from Calgary and you're over the British Columbia line at Fernie or Kicking Horse. From Vancouver, Whistler is a 3 hour bus ride from the airport.

As an American who has been in Europe, I've often been embarrased by Americans in Europe. I've also been embarrased by Americans in America, as well as by Europeans in America. My wife, being a European in America as well as an American in Europe, has been embarrased by both Americans and Europeans in both America and Europe. But it's the Australians that really get to us.

:D I thought Eddie Murphy was the only American with a sense of Humour!! I stand corrected! Some really good posts....

How long does the ski season run in the US? Could I ski late 2006? Perhaps November / Dec?

Ouuch I am just watching a Warren Miller video of Australians doing some crazy ski jumping into ice..... Reminds me a bit of an earlier post!

Hey lossy, Eddie Murphy is old news in the US...hasn't made a really funny movie in years.

He was never as funny as Monty Python (Cleese, Idle, et al) or Benny Hill anyway.

I'm fairly certain I embarass myself where ever I go and it probably has little to do with how I act and more to do with how I ski...

:dunce:

But I avoid making generalizations about entire countries nowadays that they have so many damn people living in each one.

Except maybe Luxembourg, because what are they up to for population now, 6, 7 at most?

And of course the Brits what with their huge dumbo ears and chainsaw teeth, that's just a target too easy to pass up.

Then you have your gun totin', confederate flag flyin' Southerners (American) that have more invested in their pickup truck than their "dwelling" (read: trailer).

And those French, ahh those classic smelly, foul mouthed, high nosers that think the baguette is their legimate contribution to society of the past three centuries.

And who could leave out those funny, hairy, grease ball Iti's, who weren't really concerned with who won or lost World War II, just so long as everyone left alone their olive and grape fields, and are still pissed off at the French for bringing forth the orginal imperialist with the height complex, thinking that as their national average height is 4'11" it was basically their birthright.

And then you have your New Englanders that are probably the only population in the world that a smile on someone else's face actually puts them in a bad mood. If we had a flag it would probably be made out of flannel. And we are sick and tired of our three toothed, rusted out pick up driving, gun toting farmers being compared to the three thoothed, rusted out pick up driving, gun toting farmers that live south of the Mason Dixon line. The accent is way different.

Plus, we did win the war after all.

But like I said, I stay away from most generalizations.
