Any bets if Hunter starts making snow this week?

If they really plan on opening on December 1 they should have made snow last night the temperature was in 23 in Orange county so it had to be colder at the hill, I truly hope for the Hunter people that they did.

If there is 1 mountain I trust when it comes to making snow its Hunter. They can blow top to bottom snow coverage in a few days. Which is why Hunter usually has such good early season conditions. Other might open sooner but when Hunter opens it will have more and better trails open than anywhere else in the area.

I think what they dont want is what happened to them last year when they blew lots of snow only to have it wash away from rain before anyone got to really ski it.

The airmass over the Northeast recently has had a big inversion component to it, which, especially at ski areas in more Southern locations has created problems in getting the temps they need for decent production. Case in point, this past Saturday AM, it was actually warmer on the summit of Mount Washington than it was in Concord, NH! Also, from Bromley's blog on Saturday AM, it was if I recall correctly 19 degrees down in Manchester, VT, about 26 or so at the base of Bromley and close to 30 at the summit. Mount Snow has also reported similar, frustrating, inversions recently too. I'm guessing that Hunter has been facing similar temp inversions as we all know of what Hunter's massive firepower can do when the temps are favorable. If you look at who's open right now, you'll see that pretty much its all about being in atleast Central, if not Northern NY/VT/NH and ME, where the few extra degrees of latitude have translated into a few less degrees on the thermometer and a favorable wet bulb temp!

It's just a shame they could make a base in November, and it could will get warm and rain, or December or January, February, March, this is the North east. Yes I'm sure they didn't make a lot of money last year but over the last decades they been open they have probably made more profit then the other near by areas.

They used to blow half a trail down Hellgate to the 5 fingers and while it was nice, it was pretty beat after a few runs. Now they wait and blow several so the trip is worth it. Not that I didn't go every time they opened no matter what but lately I've been starting my season at K...at least I can spend a full day there and not get bored.

Ah the old days. I was one of those crazies that used to drive up for early and late season at Hunter. They dropped it from their business model. They were to me, the Catskill equivalent of Killington in more ways then one. I sure loved it but in reality don't blame them for what they feel they have to do.
