On Southwest to be specific? I've got a boot pack that carries the boots on the side. Easy to detach and put in the bin. Wondering if I'll run into trouble with it. I have a tight turn-over and I'm afraid some of my stuff will be late ...

I just flew Southwest to Colorado and had no problem with a carry on boot bag.

Mine is a Transpack xt1 like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Transpack-XT1-Boot-Bag/dp/B001OEJM9Q/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1266894238&sr=8-6

I saw lots of people with bigger carry-on's than mine. I didn't see any boots on the outside of bags, but doubt it would be a problem. Some people basically had two carry-on's and put one in the overhead and the second one under the seat.

I also checked in a big padded ski bag with two sets of skis in it, again with no problem. I weighed it before the flight to make sure it was under 50 pounds.

Where ya headed?

I always carry my boots on the plane.

I have the High Sierra equivalent of a Transpack with the big middle compartment and the two outer compartments. On a 737 where the overhead isn't really tall and just fits a roll-aboard, I put the boots in the middle compartment and have to pull the stuff out of the outside compartments to fit the bag into the overhead. I just pack the outer compartments using a plastic kitchen trash bag and larger items.
