I have to agree with previous (and I'm late in adding my 2 cents) posts about wondering how this will impact smaller mountains. I know Ski Sundown and Mohawk's season passes are more expensive...yet, they are more convenient. I also wonder about added crowds due to this special pricing. I know they're huge (especially Killington), but seeing as I'm still learning, I still get a bit nervous around a lot of other people.

With our dog, however, we're not too sure how often we'd be able to make a daytrip to those resorts, otherwise we'd probably jump on that ASC Bronze package. We did Killington in late spring but I have to tell you, we almost killed ourselves driving there in the early AM, skiing, and driving back before 7PM. (It didn't help that I was like a kid on the night before Christmas...I barely slept the night before!) We had considered Butternut's pass, but they're not open evenings. I like skiing midweek at night when there doesn't seem to be as much of a crowd.

In the end, we're not spending money on season passes this year anyway...there's too much up in the air and I may not get to ski this winter.

The passes seem like a great deal for the consumer...for this season. My personal view is that it will hurt a lot of competing resorts, but won't be enough to keep ASC alive.

Despite my purchase of the Bronze ASC pass I will still occasionally do a "day trip" to Jiminy or Hunter. I don't ski multiple days at those areas anyway. How many times can you ski the relatively few challenging trails they have? Those are the times when I want company for the drive, and that other person may have only limited time off. As I have mentioned, retirement is great, but I cannot always link up with someone else with as much time as I have to ski. Yes, this could be damaging in the manner that Walmart has hurt smaller retail stores. On the other hand, lower prices might just increase volume (especially if they do it for mid-week) and thus make up for lower prices. After all, how many empty chairs can you count on a typical week day? They could just as well be carrying skiers since they are burning the Kilowatts to power the lifts!

Tirolerpeter since you are retired and only ski midweek you should try to hook up with the other retirees who ski at Killington. They are a fun group and pretty good skiers. Go to www.killingtonchat.com and introduce yourself and explain that you like to ski midweek and would like to meet up with people and Shortski and Mrs.G will probably answer you. BTW I live on LI too and I make the trip to Killington almost every weekend. You see I am still working so I do not have the luxury of skiing midweek except when I am on vacation.

UK and I just picked our Bronze passes up today at Attitash! We don't mind the blackout dates, that gives us a chance to explore some things over here in NH or others in VT and places in Maine we still enjoy. I like the variety it gives us. Still can't decide which Maine mountain I like best Sunday River or Sugarloaf. They're both great! When we can get to VT I do like Killington....too bad Sugarbush wasn't part of this too, that's really fun mountain too. Soo much to choose from.....hummm :)

Can this system be used to caculate how many vertical feet one has done in a day, and how many runs?

Depends on how they do it. At the bush, they only check the bottom lifts. That misses any vertical and runs made of the upper lifts.

I track it with my watch. Not really good for anything, but a neat bit of data.
