I brought my whole family there for a number of days each winter from about 1995 to 1999. We stayed in the onsite hotel, ate their food, slept in their beds, rented their equip, bought their tickets, skied their trails, rode their lifts, went to their restaurants, arcade, store. In summary, the whole shooting match. In reflecting on the upkeep and investment of all of the above, I postulate the problem is pretty fundamental: cash flow challenges and not much money for capital investments. Everything else mentioned in the above posts is a symptom of these two things.

Ascutney is a mountain of mammoth unrealized and never to be realized potential. It does have some very good pitch, could have 2500 vert and quadrupple in skiing acreage. The amount of the mountain the ski area utilizes is quite small. It's also probably the easiest ski area in VT to get to, right off 91 and could have massive snowmaking capabilities with it's proximity to the Ct. River if they undertook a similar pipeline project like Killington did to the Woodard resevoir.

None of these possibilities will ever even remotely come close to happening though due to zoning, regulations etc. So, to survive, it needs to run on a shoe string budget. I skied there a few times in high school and some great snow days and really enjoyed it, but I've also heard all the bad stuff too. If I were a regular, having the summit and only high speed lift closed as often as they do would be very frustrating for me.
