BRETTON WOODS, New Hampshire -- Hampstead, New Hampshire resident Jeff Auger took first place honors at Bretton Woods Mountain Resort's Sports Illustrated Kids Next Snow SEARCH two-day qualifying event, held on Saturday, January 27 and Sunday, January 28, 2007. Jeff will represent Bretton Woods at the national Next Snow finals to be held March 3-5, 2006 at Killington Resort in Vermont. 13-year-old Jeff also took first place with the best time of the day on for the modified GS race portion of the competition.
Thomas Shaheen, 13, of Twin Mountain, NH took first place for the rail jam, John Brown, 12, of Conway NH was the top competitor in the big air contest, 13 year old Trevor Wood from Twin Mountain, NH won the slope style competition, and Conor Heart, 10, of Chelmsford, MA was recognized as the most improved athlete for the weekend.
Bretton Woods Mountain Resort was host to one of the qualifying events for the 2007 Sports Illustrated Kids Next Snow SEARCH, a national talent search to find young athletes who best represent the next generation of extreme skiers and snowboarders. The season-long search is made up of more than 70 qualifying events held at resorts across the United States and Canada from December 2006 – February 2007. The series will culminate in the championships at Killington Resort, VT, from March 2-4, 2007. For the Finals, Killington will host more than 150 athletes who have been selected from the qualifying events to compete in everything from park and pipe, to bumps, racing, and big mountain skiing – a three-day test of all-around skill on snow.
During the Next Snow SEARCH at Bretton Woods, kids had the amazing opportunity to ski/ ride with "the most recognizable skier in the world," Glen Plake. Dressed in the bright green of Elan skis, Glen and his wife Kimberly enjoyed hitting the elements in the terrain park and freesking with the young competitors. "There are a lot of kids out there who didn't have the courage to come out and compete like you guys did, and I applaud your willingness to put yourself out there," Glen said as the kids lined up for the slope style competition.
Glen has been in many ski films, as well as won many ski industry awards, including being voted the most influential skier in 100 years by the Great Britain Ski Club in 2004 (the largest ski club in the world), winning the 2001 ESPN award for the "Pioneer of Extreme Skiing," and Glen is a three-time World Hot Dog Champion. Glen will be hosting one of his RSN Reel Thrills shows at Bretton Woods during the Next Snow Search, as well as special guest judging throughout the event.
Boys and girls ages 9-13, both skiers and snowboarders, all competed in the one class. Events included free skiing, slope style, rails, racing, and big air jump. Athletes had to compete in all events. Style, attitude and sportsmanship were considered, in addition to athletic skill. Personality, style, and attitude are important as being a good athlete. The program could be described as a cross between the "X Games" for kids and "American Idol on Snow."
Judges took their observations into consideration as well as competition scores, personal essays, and teacher recommendations.
