AZers with Kids??

I have one son, age two.

And just found out yesterday there's another on-the-way!

Congrats Phil. So they'll be about 3 years apart? My daughters are three years one week apart and it's perfect. My oldest is so independent now and out of diapers (expect for a pull-up at night sometimes) so it makes it pretty easy. It seems Pat and the Mrs. are in the knock 'em all out at once camp!

I hear ya, Pat. Two daughters for me too - 3 years and 3 months. Still got in 20+ days this season which was more than expected. My wife was insanely patient with me this season. It was tough with the newborn, but night skiing became a great option for me to get some turns in. My oldest will start skiing next season so it should be fun. I also agree that balancing parenthood and a ski habit makes you hardcore.

I'm real interested to hear how it works out for you with the sundown kid program next year. Look forward hearing about that as its obviously a good option for myself also.

I've got 3 boys ages 12, 10, and 3 1/2. The 2 older boys are both experts who can ski anything. Some of you AZers met my 10 year old Peter at Cannon. Unfortunately, my 12 year old David was recovering from a broken arm at that time, but he got back out there before Hunter closed and was ripping it up again very soon.

My 3 1/2 year old James is starting to link turns and stop on his own. His last day was April 13 at Bretton Woods.

I ski at least 50 days a season (56 this past season) and I don't understand folks who stop skiing when they have kids. If anything, I have MORE opportunity to ski now than before kids.

Yes, and you're right, my wife is very understanding. Up until 3 years ago, I was coaching seasonal programs at Hunter and was even more committed than now to skiing as much as possible. My wife worked with that because the coaching paid for all of our skiing and lessons for the kids.

When I stopped, I did so to coach my kids. They're with me at least 45 of of the 50 or more days I ski. Now, the 2 oldest are with their own coaches and I get to ski when they're in their programs, but we ski together after 2:30 or so when that's over.

And, of course, we all get out there, including my wife, when little James is doing his thing.

My wife is not a big skier, but it doesn't matter to her...she loves the ski trips and seeing the kids spend so much time with me. What's not to love?

Its just a matter of age. For the first couple of years, anyone with kids knows everything changes dramatically. There just isnt alot of time left over for personal activities. But its temporary. I cant wait to start my oldest daughter. I hope they take to it like your kids Jim. Thats an awesome thing to be able to share your passion with your kids. I've basically given up golf and i am down to only one softball league in the summer. My skiing has been cut by 1/2 to 2/3rds but its all temporary. Except maybe golf. I like not being frustrated every weekend.

I hope they take to it like your kids Jim.

If you bring them and spend time with them skiing, they will take to it because, more than anything, they want to be with Dad.

If you just dump them in a lesson and take off, don't expect much. But if you give them some of your time, even just a bit, they will get hooked.

Daughter 16 - any of you AZer's in CT need a Babysitter for your little one's.??? Sound's like the majority of you guy's all have young children....enjoy them while they are little!!!!-Yet I haved loved watching my daughter excel in sports each year. She snowboards way more than ski's, was an "ODP" soccer player for several years, and plays varsity soccer and Lacrosse. She's not bad on a surf board either...It's the "car driving " I'm freakin out about. Son 11- Now if I could ONLY get him interested in other things besides Play Station and Computer Games.... Happy & Grateful for 1 athletic child !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since my son is like 4, I've been making deal with him that I drive him to mountains
now but he'll drive me to moutains when he can drive. I'm reminding him every season
and it is 7 more seasons to go. I hope he'll still be interested in skiing with me at that
age.

2 kids here...son age 13 (best skier in the family) and daughter age 9 (will soon be better than her dad). Kids started skiing a little later (around age 8) so they don't rip down the slopes like some other kids...yet. :wink:

I know what you're talking about, LisaBatt...it can take some effort to get my son off of the computer/video games as well. :-?

One of the better uses for circuit breakers; but then they pick up the personal gaming devices that run on batteries. I have 3 boys and gaming is a constant irritant.

My wife and I have some pretty strict rules about that kind of stuff.

our son just turned 10 years old & started skiing 4 years ago which is what got me back after 15 years of not skiing. he's pretty good. skis just about everything on the hill. last year's april test was upper gondi line at sugarloaf. this year was liftline, lower national and bypass at stowe on a really bad day. skiing is a nice bonding experience. we can be bickering Friday night at bedtime and if I wake him up on Saturday at 5:30 with a "hey, you want to go skiing?" all is forgotten!

our daughter started this year at 4 and got out 4 or 5 times this season for half days (sometimes just 2 hours) hooked up to a harness most of the time. it was amazing to watch her figure out how to turn just by experimentation. my strategy late this season when I had both in tow was to go to a small area - crotched - and ski a lift, letting my son ski alone but with me able to keep an eye on him every couple of runs.
