When I was a kid on Long Island the vast majority of our trips were to Hunter, for good reason.

Now that's no joke! :-o

I need to tape that to my windshield so i never forget my goggles again.

I havent skied hunter enough to really have an opinion but based on their ability to stay open, things i've read and heard, i'm sure that they are way up there. I would also second the comment on Okemo. They seem to have it down pretty good.

My eyes water and start blinking just thinking about you that day.

I have to cast my vote to Jiminy on this one. They did an awesome job this year resurfacing after each and every melt down. But not only did they do a nice job with coverage, but they maintained it quite well too. There were so many nights this year where the snow surface was very smooth and consistent from top to bottom. I was thoroughly impressed with Jiminy's efforts this past year.

Hunter has those big "fan guns" permanent mount, very quiet. I like those guns.

We went to Hunter this past season - met JimG for just a few secs, unfortunately - it was a bitterly cold day and just standing around talking sucked. We'll try to get there again this season and maybe the kids can do a few runs together.

Of course, DMC was quite the host that day, showing us around, helping SnowPrincess, etc.

Thanks to both DMC and JimG

How has noone mentioned Bretton Woods? They made longest season, and there is never bad conditions there. Now if only they had some decent terrain.

I was sorry I couldn't spend more time with you guys that day.

Next season at either Hunter or Killington we'll spend a weekend and let the kids go nuts together.

Ahh my bad. I checked back and sure enough you had.

They deserve to be on the list.

I went there the first time in mid April and was amazed to find the mountain was basically 100% open and totally groomed.

Freaked me out. I have never seen a mountain totally groomed out on April 13!

Hunter and Crotched may have the best snowmaking in terms of mountains their size, but if you look at the bigger picture, I don't think they come on the radar. I def. would add Jiminy to the list of little guys with big guns as well. I have skied there for going on 20 years now, and I think the quality of their snow has never been great, but you cannot argue that they blow a ton of it.

In the east, I would put the #1 and #2 as Okemo and Sunday River. Both mountains are huge, have near 100% snowmaking capacity, and aren't afraid to blow on every single trail with capabilities. I am not a big Okemo fan simply because I get bored there, but I made a couple trips this past winter and I was blown away at the sheer amount of terrain open (95%?) with all man-made snow. I don't think I could find a trail without cover (outside of a few new trails at Jackson Gore with tree stumps). I was amazed.

After a few trips to Sunday River, I can say the same about that place.

Killington maybe has the largest system and capacity, but they sure do not know how to use like they used to, or could.

Best Snowmaking?

I'm with JimG and Andyzee. Hunter does a great "snowjob" all season regardless of efforts to the contrary by Mother Nature. And, yes Jiminy does really well too. While K-Mart has the Mega System, "proximity" issues make runs to Hunter and Jiminy worthwhile to me.

IMO, the best snowmaking I've ever seen is at Deer Valley. They have those electric fan-driven snow cannons. They're operating at pretty much 0% relative humidity. They run an extremely dry 'mix'. They make it in piles, let it sit for a few days to drain, and then push it around with grooming equipment. I don't go to Utah to ski manmade snow but the Deer Valley product in a lean December when AltaBird is 18" of base over rock is quite impressive.

Kmart used to be excellent pre-ASC. They had excellent quality control and almost never had wet guns. That's ancient history and Kmart is now only doing quantity, not quality. They do still have the biggest capacity in terms of the number of guns they can run simultaneously but when you calculate it in terms of "snowmaking capicity per skier visit", smaller mountains are going to have a better shot at resurfacing everything quickly after a thaw.

Im procrastinating some work a bit but Hunter only gets like 60 inches a year on average it looks like. Thats the deal winner for me right there with Bretton Woods a close second.

mad river!

seriously though, crotched by far. if you are not voting crotched in this place, you probably have not been there or seen the power, speed, and quality of their snow making.

I probably shouldn't respond because this is a very biased opinion, but I have to toot the horn of our snowmaking team this year at Sugarbush. I was really proud of them. That's all I will say, and maybe there are some unbiased people who experienced snowmaking at The Bush this year who want to comment.
