Word. Over half my days were at the mighty Sundown last season. If I count the times I was there with my daughter, I was probably there 30 days. I love that little hill and look forward to watching all our kids learn to ski there. We are very fortunate.

Sundown, wow. I skied there when I lived in W. Hartford. Haven't skied there since 1979.

If you haven't already, you will soon discover there is almost a fanatical group of Sundown supporters here. Despite its small size, I might argue the best run ski area in SNE, at least out of the ones I've been to.

Us skiers are a dedicated bunch..I don't even like to drive to Kohls to buy clothes but I'll drive 7 hours to Stowe for a long weekend..I rent an apartment..lease my car...but I spent more than $5,000 on skiing this past season and have 5 pairs of skis and I'm getting two more pairs in the fall..

This group would make for a great Psych case study. I'll bet we would be at the far end of the standard deviation....

Here's a WSJ article about how it's getting more difficult to find senior ctizen ski deals due to an overall increase in skiers age. We're getting old

This surprised me..."While it's difficult to tell how many senior-citizen skiers there are, visitors aged 45 and older made up 31% of total ski-resort business in the last season, up from 21% seven years ago, according to a report by the National Ski Areas Association, a Lakewood, Colo., industry group."

That's a much higher % than I would have guessed.

When they say "business" I believe they are talking about revenue. There are more of us but we probably, as group, spend less per capita. Take your customers, tip them upside down and shake. More money inevitably falls out the pockets of those in the high earning years of life. When's the last time someone sized you up and came over to invite you to look around their new 1M$ condos????

She probably came to that conclusion 10 seconds after meeting you long before you told her of your love for skiing... You should see the looks I get when I tell them I love to snowboard..

Yeah and the thing is...most of these women spend thousands at the mall..plus all the fake tans(gross)..and face-cream..lol

When I first became a skier..I always talked about skiing to non-skiers and now I don't even bother...when I told my date last night how much I spend on skiing..she looked at me like I was crazy..
i once had a girl break up with me because of riding. as she stormed out of my place she tossed my board to the ground and said " you ride this damm thing more that ride me" i ended up shooting soda out my nose cause i started laughing so hard which just made things worse.

We'll she should have tried snowboarding...at least she would have spent most of the first day on her back.

funny thing was that said girl followed me from nj to vt. i told here many times what the deal was. so its not like it was a big surprise. i used to have a board rack in bedroom btu she thought it looked tack so she made move it to the living room. i now know it was because she was jealous

People wonder why I bother with Blue mountain when I ski Jackson Hole every season..I can't become a fair weather..fair condition jaded skier..I have to ski whenever I can so a couple hours after work at Blue is a heck of alot better than no skiing at all..and due to our typically icy conditions..I can get mad steezy speed..plus spring skiing in PA can be had any week of the season..

Actually, it's the only way you can work off all that beer. ;)

It's been a few years since I've flown a small plane but I remember the most common plane, the Cessna 172, burned about 8-10 gallons per hour. I'm guessing Avgas (100 octane gasoline for prop planes) costs about 5 or 6 bucks a gallon now. If you don't own a plane you can rent one by the hour, the time is charged whenever the engine is running. It was $119 an hour to rent a late model plane and $80 an hour to rent the older one a few years ago. The rental usually includes the fuel.

I know you long ago got back on topic, but I just read this thread & have to agree with ERJ-145CA that private aviation should not be grouped in with yachting. I paid $5k to get my license 7 years ago, and I pay $40/month to be in a club that has planes for $65-$85/hr, including fuel & everything. That's in the Boston area, which is pretty high cost.

So I can take 1-2 other people to Sunday River for a weekend for about $200. That is comparable to the cost to drive the 300 miles if you include all costs. And the $5k entrance fee is not too bad--a lot of non-wealthy people spend that on a motorcycle, snowmobile, etc.
