This happened to me last year at the loaf. In my case, the boots were too small and my to was pressed right up against the front, even scrunched over a bit. I went over a small drop and when I landed it just went bang. when I took off my boot later the toe was black. It took almost 10 months to grow out.

Did you end up buying new boots?

I was actually demoing some boots, they were Full Tilt Classics. I never had them appropriately fitted. I went back to my Dalbellos and all is right with the world again.

I think the ultimate experience would be to share a chair with Scotty and Cornhead. :)
And Mary Jane  You'll get your chance, hope Ullr shows up too! I've never had any damage to my toes from skiing, other than paying the price for poor toenail hygiene, long toenails cutting into the adjacent toes, that's no fun. I have caught myself doing something strange this season however, curling my toes while in the middle of a turn. I've never done this before, and I can't believe it's conducive to good skiing. I assumed it was because my old Dalbellos were so packed out, nope, did it in my new Heads too, and they fit fine. I don't do it consciously, I just catch myself doing it.

Trim your toenails nice and short and it should stop being a problem. You now have properly sized ski boots, they will be tighter and less warm than your previous boots that were probably too big.

Here's a good example of toenails that are far too long, see post 18:

They should be cut back as far as possible, but be careful in the corners so don't get ingrown.

When skiing agressively, you should tighten down your boots, especially the 2nd and 3rd buckle. You should also unbuckle them on the lift.

I tighten my boots down quite a bit and loosen them on the lifts, but I've heard that some boot fitters believe that if a boot is properly fitted, there should be no need to unbuckle.

I lose my big toenails every year. Unlike your big toe, they're useless. Usually happens when pushing hard in the bumps or somehow get knocked back unexpectedly. My toes then jam into the boots. Repeat this a few times...

Went to a bootfitter today that I trust. His final analysis was that the seam on top of my liners is compressing against my big toe. (which does gel with where the pain is)

He baked the liners for me and tried to reshape them using a few odds and ends. It hurt like a mother trying to get my foot crammed into the boot with the expanders in there.

I am going to try them on once the toe has healed to see if there is a difference. If not, he said there is a 95% chance some intuitions would solve it. After a lengthy shell fit, he was sure that there the sizing was spot on. If I go the intuition route and it is still screwed, he said he could charge a restocking fee and work on some new boots. We shall see.
