Do any of you AZers ever go to the Boston Globe Snow Sports expo? If you do, what is it like and what is your favorite part? What do you expect to get from it and what should others go expecting?

took my son there last year and he wants to go this year again.

i found all the "deals" not to be deals at all. i.e., discounts on tixs/condos/hotels during dates when skiing could be sketchy, probably able to get with a bit of persistence anyway by phone, etc.

i essentially went around and badgered the marketing folks for discount coupons and stuff like that and got a few results.

does get you "pysched" for the season though. its basically free admission but parking is $$$. take public transportation!

Agree w/Angus on all his points. I got a couple free lift tickets, plenty of info, a hefty parking fee and makes me realize the season is almost here.

They have a lot of sweepstakes entries, which would probably lead to timeshare solicitation. Never won anything at a ski expo.

Good info from the ski equipment reps.

Will definitely go myself, if for no other reason than that it gets me juiced...

Being a newbie to all of this, my daughter and I went last year for the first time and had a great time. Sort of one-stop shopping for ski area literature, etc. Couldn't get my daughter off of the Skiers Edge machine! Was able to get a slew of discounts for lift tickets and so on which we made good use of last year. In agreement on the timeshare, trip packages, etc...lots of pushing on that. And a lot of the discount coupons, etc. are for inconvenient (at least for us) times but there was definitely many we were able to make use of.

We just enjoyed visiting all the booths, picking up stickers and other propaganda, and generally getting psyched for winter. They had a freestyle/aerial presentaion that was great too. It's a good take.

I'll agree w/the above posts, as far as the discounts.
On trip packages - they tend to be either _very_ early, e.g. pre christmas, or not much of a deal at all.

Ski area maps, and stickers, more often than not - marketing literature, and the odd discount voucher are the free cruft.

However, Ski Market also uses it to clear out last years overstock, and some good deals can to be had for underlayers, jackets, hats, gloves, helmets and goggles. They also have ski's and boots. (I'd strongly recommend against buying boots at a venue like this, go to an experienced bootfitter.)

Just keep in mind that not many other 'brick and mortar' stores in NE are going to have anything but cheap gear for cheap prices until the spring, so it's not a bad place to get some extra equipment.

And yeah, like going to see a bad ski film premiere, it's a great way to get psyched for the season.

No timeshare presentations, just sweepstakes that are probably for timeshare solicitation.

As for lift tickets, very few free passes unless you really sweet talk. But there are discount tickets available with less a$$ kissing.

Some good independent boothes like "Friends of Tuckerman's" and similar.

It can be rather enjoyable even if you are an experienced skier. I hope there'll be some snowkiter folks there this year. After working it once, I thought it was a non-event, but as long as I avoid the people I used to work for, I found I had a good time. There's lots of Quebec people there as well as reps from all sorts of ski biz. You can actually find some great Ski Market deals. I worked for them on this show twice. They clear out all the cobwebs, do a big effort to truck all equipment they discount to the show and price it to clear. Just stay away from the skate boarder half pipe as the noise may break your eardrums.
