A rope across a trail covered in powder...reads like a reserved sign for GSS with flashing lights. I've gotten really good at ducking ropes at speed or jumping over low hanging ropes..except for the one Ski Vermont Partee when my forehead hit the rope on Bypass causing a full yardsale and a near decapitation..I guess I unofficially opened the trail. I'll always remember the group poach with about 20+ ski vermont listers at one of the Stowe Partees..wow..

Yelled at from SP @ shawnee as a kid.
Yelled at from SP @ Snow, his name tag said he was from france, I gave him lip about cheese, wine and surrender monkeys. he was yelling at alot of people coming out of the "panhandler"? or Claim jumper? woods (on the carinthia side) and when talking to other SP on the CB he was told the trail was open, we skied away.

once we were 'red-eye resting' in the woods at the bush, when a pair of SP skied by looked at us, sarcastically said "Busted" and continued on their way down. me and pals looked at each other, paused, and then passed the bowl. and skied down few minute later.

Got ticket ripped a couple times in my early teens (early 80s) at Pat's Peak for poaching the woods to skier's right off of Zephyr. Amazing how far ski areas have come...

I have been patrolling now for 10 years. I have never pulled a ticket. Only marked a few tickets which gives them a second chance that day. I prefer to give them my pop quiz. "If you hit a 50 lb child at that speed do you kill them?" . Then I point to a 50lb child. It usually catches them off guard and it gets most people that are skiing way out of control that look of OMG. Obviously were talking about the out of control not yet EXPERT skier here. I am sure none of you guys fit that category.

You see a lot of stupid stuff on patrol. Some folks are a little light on the grey matter. For example, Mountain closes lifts at 4:00pm. At about that time ski patrol gets in position to SWEEP all opened trails to close the mountain. At about 4:05pm patroller sees father and 10 year old son getting ready to ski down a closed trail. Patroller approaches them and says to the father " you know we don't sweep closed trails so I truly hope your not going to ski that closed trail with your son. Father says to patroller in front of son, "F U - lets go son" and skis down the closed trail with son in toe. Really good training for the son. Teaching son, that is how you talk to patrollers, police officers, your boss, or anyone else. BTW - They are on their own. They both get hurt their both screwed. No cell phone access on this mountain.

Wow! Things have changed since I was there.

Under the old management, they wouldn't buy us any rope to close anything. Even if it was all bare, they'd say it was open with thin cover.

Playing ski cop is my least favorite aspect of patrolling, mostly because of how beligerent people frequently get when when they're bagged doing something wrong. I do tend to look the other way unless there is a clear satey issue.

I do have to say, it was rather comical being on the other side of that process a few years back. I was at Dartmouth on a nice sunny day for the first time. I never got a map, I just skied everything that was open. I skied off the top of the chair on the peak looker's right and skied over to an outlook at the top of the cliffs to get a look. WhenI came back, there was an unroped opening onto a trail I hadn't been on. I enjoy linking some GS turns on, what turns out to be one of their racing trails and midway down, think to myself: "Self: how did I get here?" and also (Why is no one else here?")

As I pause before getting on the lift, I am surounded by patrollers, all of who are acting like I robbed a bank, they're calling for backup, the SWAT team, etc.. Now, I'm starting to find this amusing, and eventually have to interupt the lecturing of a patroller less than half my age, to ask: "When you close your trails, do you let ignorant schmucks like me know that the trail is closed by, say, putting up a rope, or a sign or SOMETHING? Beacuse If you don't communicate that to me, I'm too stupid to figure that out."

They were saving it for the weekend...but we were there only for that Friday.

Out of respect we stayed off of it because it was the last lift ride of the day and it didn't matter to me if he clipped my ticket or banned me from the weekend.

We poached another closed run away from the lift instead.

Nah, I'm a nice boy. Don't break the rules. Honest, officer.

Mostly, I'm reluctant to poach trails out of fear of what will happen to my skis. I don't really update my equipment often enough to take the risk. Except for Empire at Whiteface. If there's snow it's a go.

Got caught by upper management at Sugarloaf when I poached the piles of snow they'd blown the previous day on Upper Wedge. He saw me duck the rope and followed me down. He agreed it was pretty awesome and asked why I ducked when I knew he was watching and I answered, "so you'd have an excuse to ski it too". needless to say, no warning or pass pulled.:)

Was stopped and warned once for skiing too quickly while I was younger. Otherwise no problems. I've only poached trails 3 times in my life...all in the past couple seasons, though, so who knows if I might get stopped in the future.

Welcome to the darkside of poaching..You have to do it in stealth mode..get in quick and out quick..no safety meetings when you poach. Think about technicalities like not officially ducking a rope by entering in the woods..and also not bragging to people on the lift that you just poached..because one or two poachers is a stealth mission..but when all the Tom Dick and Harrys start following the lemmings..the red coats start intercepting..they used to have a 5 dollar canned food day at Stowe in December and people would keep extra 5 dollar bills and cans in their car..and poach everything...this was when there was alot of new snow and lots of trails..closed(reserved)..

Ski Patrollers have to be tough because if somebody poaches a trail and gets injured..they might try to sue the ski area...I would only sue a ski area if I was run over by a snowmobile or if a chair I was riding fell from the cable..something that wasn't my fault..The dude who cursed out a patroller in front of his kid is a Dic&..and deserves to get pooped on by birds..

When I first started skiing..I used to get yelled at by patrollers for hitting jumps on the sides of the trail and sometimes jumps were purposely destroyed...they always yelled"Keep you Skis on the Snow"...and this was like early to mid 90s..Now I'll sidestep onto a bench and jump off it..just to get a foot of air..lol..but nothing beats the big-mo fo booters..ya kna mean..Holla

Just yelled at for skiing fast and going into the woods where "there is not a trail"... both times at Ragged, both times they told me I would lose my pass. I still ski fast and I still ski those woods. Now with Ragged under new management maybe things will be different?

I usually don't duck ropes and ski patrol are all good guys.

So, I'm not the only one that thought that statement was, in the words of Chris Rock: "Iggnant"

Ignorant, rude, insensitive, morose, unfunny, idiotic, moronic, unsteezey...you take your pick.

Definitely:

a) Not cool to say.
b) Pathetic to brag about it.

Me thinks this protest falls on completely deaf ears though. He hasn't a clue......
