Ms. Trailboss and I went Candlepin Bowling this afternoon. It had been at least ten years since I have been Candlepin Bowling and I had forgotten how challenging it is! Lots of fun. How much of you do it or have done it lately? Any good lanes nearby? I really enjoyed the different strategy, three balls, and the deadwood!

I bowl every Wednesday in a league and 1 or 2 other times a week. My all time high string is a 132 and I threw a 124 last night. My league average this year was LOUSY with an 84, I usually get high 90s or low 100s.

There used to be a Candlepin Bowling alley under Green Mtn Books in Lyndonville. It was open during the last few years, but I don't think that it has been able to make it. :( It was a cool lane because and above the lanes was painted the Willougby Gap at Sunset. Vintage too. It was really cool!

Amen, brotha.

I love candlepin, but I don't go enough. I enjoy it much more than 10 pin...

We'll have to check out the candlepin in Lyndonville next time we're over there...grew up in the area and never went! We always went to the big ball alley in StJ.

my family had their own league for years when I was a kid. I first set foot on an alley when I was 2. I bowled in leagues at the Wal-Lex in Waltham before it closed. I did that until junior high, stopped, then picked it back up late in high school. Got to be too much in college. I was going to join the family league after college, but it ended up folding.

I haven't bowled in a few years, but I keep telling my wife I want to go. I was decent when I stopped (103 avg, 127 high single, ~360 high triple). I think I could pick it back up easily, but I don't think I could join a league. There are some lanes down the street from us in Wakefield. There's also the Woburn Bowladrome, the Wilmington lanes. Not sure where the are more on the North Shore. I know tons of guys who are in Wednesday, Friday or Sunday night leagues in the area.

what I like about it is it's not the beer sport that many people think it is. I don't know of a single alley that has a bar attached or allows coolers. Sure, people go out after, but I don't know anyone who bowls drunk. I think that's more common in 10-pin leagues and alleys.

It's that way for candlepin because you drank while you bowled no one would roll above a 40.

I know. It's not an easy game. I don't understand why people who bowl 10-pin think candlepin isn't really bowling. They should try it some time.

I bowl ten-pin now (203 average, 290 high, 712 series high)and used to bowl candlepin as a kid. I tried candlepin not to long ago and almost threw my arm out. Ten pin is easy. Hit a spot 40 feet down the lane, with enough fingers and strikes are easy. Candlepin requires a little more thinking. Even more rare than Candlepin is Duckpins. Anyone ever bowl those?

growing up in haverhill (MA), the local boy's club had two lanes in the basement. you needed to have a group though, since you needed someone at the back of the alley to manually set the pins by hand.

I think I've played Duck pin, but I can't remember what the difference is anymore. Its been several years since I've seen anything but 10 pin around here..

Duck pins are smaller versions of ten pins, and the ball you use is similar to candlepin.

Downed pins are cleared between balls, but there are three rolls per frame.

I used to go Duckpin bowling in RI. We never had Candlepin - just Duckpin. I never realized there was a difference, though. So I guess I've never been Candlepin bowling then.
