Resort: cannon

conditions: pp, mg, windpacked

Report: This has to be one of the slowest twofer days i've ever seen at cannon. temps were very cold in the a.m. but warmed up nicely...sort of. The combination of thick layers and lot's of tram runs kept me o.k., not the killer cold that the media has constantly been hyping. Winds were fairly light, except the chronic 20 mph that blows near the top. not nearly as cold as killington yesterday. trails were in great shape. taft's, vista way and a few other were open on natural snow, but kind of thin. groomers were excellent, never skiing off due to lack of crowds. I rode the tram several times solo, as early as 1-1:30. The zoomer area was real nice, with soft grippy snow, and even the zoomer lift line was fun. Still waiting for a little more snow to venture to mitt, as the routes i want require lot's of it. I wish i had pics, but i'm still trying to figure out the friggen camera (yes that's right, I'm technically challenged).

one more thing- I rode the tram with this guy who was talking into a radio and contolling the movements of 2 fighter jets. It was so cool, he would have them swoop down near the tram as we were ascending), did get me a little nervous thinking about the whole alps thing a few years back.

think f-18 fighter jets, really i couldn't make this #$#@@# up if i tried. he was talking on a radio and giving the pilots instructions. It was pretty obvious they were all pilots, I'm assuming military. what he was doing skiing i have no idea. really strange!

I was there on Saturday and this was also going on. I'm not sure they were f-18's though, they looked like A10's to me. However, there is a high possibility that I am wrong, more of a guess and a photo confirmation when I got home.

A10's are a bad ass looking plane. The air national guard flies them here in CT. I'd like to see pics.

Maybe they were trying for some sort of Photo op with the tram? I've never seen A-10s flying around this area but I suppose it is a possibility. Were they flying back and forth through the notch at low elevations? That is definiteIy the type of training A-10 pilots would be doing.
I sometimes see the F-16s squadron out of Burlington over this way doing training. One day at lunch time they were having a dogfight over St. J . It was rather amazing to watch as they were twisting and diving 10,000 feet above us.

A-10's @ Sunapee

I was @ Sunapee on Sunday and the flew close enough that I could make them out riding up the triple chair. It was about noon time.

A-10s train over the Whites at low elevation fairly regularly. I believe they come from somewhere in RI, but I could be wrong.

We saw fighters on Saturday around 3:00. We were tired, and hence in the tuckerbrook area; the cornered HARD directly overhead. No idea where they came from, but my wife saw some back the week before christmas as well (also at Cannon).

I see a pair of A-10's fly everyday up route 8 due north in Ct , they are not at a low elevation but u know without looking up its not a commercial airliner by that unmistakable sound they make.

This is when I saw them Saturday. There were four of them and were very low to the ground. We also saw 4 of the same plane at MRG on 1/31, sometime mid afternoon, heading west towards NY state or Burlington... Porter
