SOUTH EGREMONT, Massachusetts — The Catamount Ski Area, which straddles the Massachusetts/New York state line in the Berkshires, opened for the season this past weekend – and increased attendance over its previous all-time opening weekend record by more than 200 percent.
"By far, it was our best-ever opening," said Richard Edwards, vice president for marketing at the resort. "We attribute that to the addition of a triple chairlift in our Meadows Learning Area, the fact that our terrain park was ready to go with a lot of elements, and the fact that we were offering top-to-bottom skiing on opening day."
Edwards said that the resort has been making snow round the clock, and that at least 17 of the resort's 32 trails would be open this weekend, including two additional top-to-bottom routes from the summit.
Short and medium-range weather forecasts indicate a prolonged cold snap leading into Christmas weekend. According to Edwards, those cold temperatures could be a boon for snowmaking.
"If the forecast verifies," Edwards said, "it wouldn't surprise me to see about 80 percent of the mountain's terrain open by Christmas day. We could very well have the best and most skiing and snowboarding we've ever offered for Christmas week."
