I was at Cannon on Saturday and caught the first Tram. I was on my GS skis and decided to lap the Tram. I took Tramway to By-Pass to Extension to Avalacnhe. I got down just as the yellow car was coming over the ridge, I decided to see if I could take the yellow and ski down to catch the red. I almost did it the fourth time down. The car was just leaving as I clicked out of my bindings at the stairs. It got to crowded to do this after the fifth time. 10K vertical in 1 to 1.25 hours. Not bad.

Has anybody succeeded in this on weekend, it is very doable on a weekday?

Reminds me as a kid skiing Ward Hill wanting to beat the chair I road down the Mountain.

I would think a big factor in how doable your pursuit would be would depend on the operator. I've only ridden the tram once recently and it took the lady what seemed like a few minutes to dock the tram at the top. I didn't notice whether the other car took off before she was fully docked.

What does the tram take? eight minutes? One could certainly make it down to the bottom in less than that if they were moving at a decent clip.

They have to leave at the same time. This is how Trams operate to my knowledge.

If I am not mistaking the tram on a weekday takes 12 minutes, and on the weekend takes 8 as long as it is not too windy at the top. It is fun to lap the tram, I usually get to do that on Mondays a couple of times.

That is if you ride the same car. It is less if you try catch the load of the other car. How long to load a car? 5 minutes?

Did it twice in a row on a weekday afternoon, a few years back.......still have to ski very fast though. Never tried on a weekend. You can ski cannon top to bottom in under 2 minutes, if you're trying.

I don't think most of these guys understand what you're talking about....cannon is probably one of the only ski areas in the world where this can be done during normal operations......

There are alot of things the east coast has over the west..skiing is not one of them..

Agreed.

But for max vert/hour, I believe Wildcat would give JH and the Bird a very strong run for their $$$.

The Wildcat Express HSQ covers 2100 vert feet in 6 minutes. Lynx is a fast groomer with a pretty direct route back to the lift. Most days (even Sundays) there's no lift line the entire day. Very easy to get 5 runs in an hour.

Not saying the terrain compares to JH or the Bird. Just saying a vert whore just might rack up more feet skiing that quad for the day than he would on any tram.

2100 vert in 6 minutes is impressive..pretty similar to the forerunner quad at Stowe..10k vert hours are the best..at Blue the best I've done is 8 runs off the quad in an hour for 8k plus..For racking up big vert..chairlifts rule because you don't have to take your skis off or stand..

Last season I did 36000 in a day at Taos which has no high speed lifts but I didn't take any breaks.

I have done 10K + vert/ hour at loon many times during the week.

It's harder to do that at Loon than Wildcat.

The lift with the most vert at Loon is the Gondola. According to skilifts.org, it covers 1738 vertical feet in 7.13 minutes. To get 10,000 feet in an hour, you'd need to make 6 runs. At 7.13 minutes per ride, you'd be spending 42.78 minutes on the gondola. That would leave you 17.22 minutes; or 2.87 minutes per run.
That 2.78 minutes would include the time spent taking off your skis, boarding the gondola, getting out of the gondola, putting your skis back on, and skiing down the mountain. That doesn't sound doable to me.

The North Peak HSQ (1563 vert feet) would require 7 trips for the 10,000 feet. At 4.8 mins per trip you'd be riding the lift for 33.6 minutes of that hour. That leaves 26.4 minutes, or 3.8 minutes per run to get down the mountain. Certainly doable on a weekday with no lift line.
------
Wildcat says the Wildcat HSQ covers 2112 vertical feet; skilifts.org says it covers 2041. Both sources say the ride time is 6 minutes.

to get the 10,000 feet you'll need 5 trips. That's a total of 30 minutes ride time. That leaves 30 minutes, or 6 minutes per run to ski down the mountain. Easily doable.

I ride the Kanc quad, ski over to the North Peak quad, ride that, ski to to the Kanc quad, repeat. PM me if you want to join me. According to my Avocet watch, there is app 2800' of vert each trip. Must be done midweek! Almost never ride the Gondi.
Agree Wildcats lift is fast, but only about 2100' of vert/ride.

I love threads like this...this morning at Blue I managed 7 runs in the first hour off the Poconos coldest 6-pack@ 1052 vertical feet..pretty steezy for PA on a holiday weekend..second hour was 5-6 runs and third hour was 4 runs..

Back before they had high speed lifts..2-3 runs an hour was sometimes all you got on crowded weekends..
