I know many in the forum probably tune their own gear, but for those that leave it up to the 'pros'...

Do the shops you leave you gear at for wax/edge work typically give you some kind of claim ticket to pick up you gear?

I've been to several shops, and all refuse to offer any kind of evidence that they have your gear. Maybe I am paranoid, but I never rest easy until my gear is back in my possesion...

2 of the 3 places i've used in the past couple of years did give a claim ticket. i don't think either checked them when i was picking up tho.

1 place i used this year didn't give anything. didn't think much about it until later that day. didn't turn out to be a problem but for other reasons i won't be going back to that shop.

No claim ticket is simply bad business. You are not paranoid. There are a lot of skilled mechanics and owners out there who are very good with their product and are very bad business people. Cripes, my cleaner gives me a ticket for a $1.80 shirt clean.

A friend of mine left his skis for a tune at a shop near the mountain. They gave him a ticket. When he came back to get them, nobody could find them. Now what? The ticket described exactly what model, length and binding were left there, on a store form, so there was no disputing what the goods were. so the shop had to give him an equivalent set to ski on. It was 3 weeks before his skis were "found". They were taken by a customer who thought it was his season rental.

There is NO WAY I would leave equipment without a ticket.

When our shop takes in a piece of equipment for anything, we have a form that we fill out. It has the type of ski/binding/serial# all listed. Boots as well if binding work is being done.
The customer gets one copy, one copy is sent to our accountant, and one is taped to the ski(says what we are doing to it)
When the customer picks up the gear, they sign our copy saying they took the gear with them.

That is also the only place that has not given me a claim ticket; all others have. And yes, I had a problem there, too.

Thank for all the input.

If anyone has a suggestion for a reputable tune shop in the Portland/Scarborough area I'd be happy to know by either reply or PM. I could also hit the Portsmouth area, although a bit less convenient. I'd really like to service at Fire on the Mountain in Dover as I have had great service there and heard good reviews, but it is very hard for me to get there before closing on consecutive days to drop off and pick up.

Might try giving a few ski shops(Arlberg...etc.) a call and just inquire....you should be able to get a few refs...and see if you come up with some duplicate refs...
