Did You Count Ski Days Before AZ?

I do now, but before I started posting here I never did. I have quite a few friends at Whiteface and if I ask them how many days they have on snow, they can ball park it, but don’t count them.

I keep track of the days, dates and where I ski on a spreadsheet. Sometimes I ask myself why am I bothering? What does it prove and who cares?

AZers often reference their ski day count in a variety of threads and it seems like a lot more count then don’t. I guess I’m a follow the leader type cause I started doing it when I started hanging here. I’m sure lots of people count that have never been in a ski forum, but do you think it’s an AZ thing?

If you do count why do you do it?

Still don't count really. I guess once I get more TR's I'll have a better guess but I must've gone up at least 9 or 10 times before I came to AZ and started donig TR's. My "stack" of lift tickets fell off yesterday from my snowboarding pants, so I guess I can't really count them.

I don't usually count . . . I don't usually do trip reports . . .and I DEFINITELY don't keep track on a spreadsheet . . .

If I ever feel compelled to come home and track my progress every day and generate weekly, monthly and annual reports on the state of my skiing, then skiing will have officially lost its appeal. I usually just ballpark the amount of days I get in those "how many days" threads, and I enjoy comparing my totals to other people, but it the number in and of itself doesn't really hold any significance to me . . . I don't really try to get a higher number every year or anything . . .

I've got a database going. I have a number of reasons for doing this. It started out as seeing where I ski the most, to help me determine my purchases for the following year with regards to tix or season passes. But then it just got interesting know how many days I ski, where I ski, with who I ski, the conditions, etc...

Yes. I started in 2000 or so for reference and to see how much my season pass was worth.

i used to keep a journal when i was much younger, like middle school age. Now, i only know how many days i get because its hard to forget 10-15 trips. If i skied more, i'd be ballparking it.

Before AZ? No. I just started doing TRs each outing in 2004-05. I started then because that's when I made the decision to try and ski more. Before that season, 12 days per year would be considered a lot for me. Why do I do it? With other guys/gals here logging 40/50/60+ days, I'm certainly not trying to impress anyone with my meager 20-30 day season, but I use my TRs here as my personal ski log. As sad as it sounds, I often reread my TRs from the previous season during the summer months. It sorta helps with the August ski jones...

Belleayre actually has a promotion this year... Whoever uses their season pass the most days this year gets a free season pass next year. I'm nowhere close but a cool idea anyway...

Yes, to make sure I got my season pass worth. And so I can compare days per year to the progress I've made. I just write the first letter of the place I went down on a paper. Very advanced.

I'm at 20 days now, according to the letters.

. . .

I use a spreadsheet because I need to work a certain amount of days at WF and we are encouraged to keep track of the number and dates worked. I just add the number of free skiing days to it for myself, but I think I want to stop doing that. I’m starting to think it’s a pointless habit I want to break, although, the thought of agreeing with you on an issue is worrisome.

You've said you’re an instructor at Gore, if so you need to get a minimum amount of work days in too, don’t you?

Why do you feel the need to defend what you do? Different strokes for different folks...

I keep track of the days. The past 3 seasons Ive been trying to increase the total number of days I get out on snow, regardless of where, how much vert, or the conditions. 3 years ago the goal was get out 30 times, and I got 38. Last year it was 40 and I got 43, this years its 50, and while Im on my way with 20, I got some work to do. Just kind of my way of motivating myself on those hungover days, etc.

seeing that i've been skiing for just 3 years it is easy to count up my days. 04/05 - 2 days, 05/06 - 11 days, and so far this season - 10. i want to keep tabs on my days for two reasons. the first is to track my progression. second, like marc, i want to be sure that my season pass was worth it.

I have counted days for the last 5 or 6 years and still do. Though I have been noticing that I am starting to care less and less about the amount of days I am skiing. I have tried to focus on the quality of skiing as much as possible. I have 9 days under my belt for the season, but I feel that I have had more fun on the hill this year than I did in the last 2 years combined. Unfortunately, the fun has cost me, as I have spent more money that I would like to on trips out west.

The season before I joined AZ I was able to keep track of my days, but that was because I kept all the lift tickets and counted them at the end of the season. That was also the first year my wife skied and my first real year back on skis after several years off. Since then I've been working at Sundown so I have a season pass, no more tickets to count. I could probably find out how many days my pass has been scanned but I don't really care enough I guess. So to answer the question; Yes I did count before AZ and now I don't. ;)

always kinda kept track in my head, less than 5, more than 10, more that 15, etc. more than 15 was a really good year for me. I'm shooting for 20 next year.
