I am visable from Waterville valley. I am a private mountain. Its a nice name for a town also.
would you happen to be located in campton? can't remember the name of the place though, but other than snow's mountain and that bump in campton i can't remember seeing any other ski areas from WV.

There is a ski area in CAMPTON? Where? Details? Pics?

We rented a house in Waterville Estates a couple of years ago. Campton Mountain is within Waterville Estates and is run by the Waterville Estates Association. The year that we rented there, the Campton Mountain did not open because of poor natural snow (there's no snowmaking) and also because of significant financial troubles within Waterville Estates. However, it is my understanding that last season the mountain did open for a few days. There is a double chairlift there and services about 3 trails; I'd say the vertical is about 300'. There's a snack bar/bar at the base. There is lighting for night skiing, a potential attraction as there is no night skiing within waterville valley. Anyone can ski there; it costs a bit more if you're not a Waterville Estates resident.

If you're curious or a NELSAP-er, it's pretty easy to get there. After getting off of exit 28 (and bowing your head to Ski Fanatics), make a right turn at the traffic light onto 175. Follow around about 3/4 mile to the right and then make a left onto the road marked "Waterville Estates." You'll see the signs to the mountain after about 1 mile.

Stomachdoc I knew you would get this one. The night skiing option is great info. I did not know that. I might bring my kids there this winter at some point if its open.
As far as ski fanatics its on the Saturday agenda. I have to pick up the new board and skies for my daughter I bought this fall and my sons board I got tuned.

I claim to have the longest vertical drop of any resort in my state. (no checking verticals now!)

I am within 2 hours drive from two major cities.

About two years ago I added a new expert trail that runs parallel to another expert trail.

Blue Mountain off I-80 in PA ?

That is correct sir!

you also have a fantastic view from the summit, are located in a former top destinations for ski trains, and survived two other now lost areas nearby. i think you can see them from your summit. your summit lift is a awesome freakish hybrid and you have one of the oldest surface lifts in the country. :D

Yeah but can you guess the name

Rivercoil is DQed

So now I would be surprised if any of the other people couldn't guess it. By the way on one of those other closed ski areas it appears that they keep a trail on the left still open for sledding about 1/3 of the way up the slope if you drive up there. It is still on my list for places to hike.

i answered the question, just in a unique way ;) i was actually planning on putting together a blurb on this area for the thread but you beat me to it.
Haha yeah. Pretty nice place though. It really feels like you were skiing way back when. From the double chair to the thin green circles its all good (when there is natural snowfall).

I am the ski area where the lift ticket wicket was invented, and my patent for it was approved on March 22, 1966.

What is my name?

This one is still waiting.

Hint: On my inagural opening day, lift tickets were being sold out of a converted chicken coup.

Ok, Ok...my guess!
Whitney's/ Black Mountain

I really think it was Whitney's/Black Mountain. North Conway and the Jackson area was a popular ski train destination.

OK, here is mine: let's start with this one.

This ski area was one of the first in the country, founded by community members who just wanted to ski. They began using an old cow pasture with car headlights at night to illuminate the slope. A homemade rope tow was the main lift. Soon thereafter, they moved south to their current location, another meadow on Shonyo Hill. They built a lodge, Cross Country Trails, and a few rope tows. That was in 1936. Today it is still in operation run by volunteers, sports a T-Bar from Stowe (who also offered to give it snowmaking equipment in 2004), and still has night skiing (with real lights), natural snow conditions, and a homemade rope tow. It sports super steep trails like Mixer and Zitz Mark and, like every other ski area of the vintage, has a "Bunny Hop" trail.

This area has had at least 3 different names through the course of it's existance.

When it went by the first name, many of the trail names were racing terms.

It's original double chair was unique.

It retained it's second name for only 3-4 years.

OK, skiing here started in the 1930's after one of the steepest autoroads to the summit was built by the CCC. The road is still used today. People used to hike up and ski down the CCC Ski Trail, the Bear Den.

In 1953, a POMA lift was installed to the summit. It still operates today. Soon after that first season, the owners went bankrupt. A local business man purchased the mountain and reorganized it adding a double chair to the summit and buying land.

In the 1960's that POMA was shortened and a double to the summit was added. He cut more trails including one named for him: Doug's Drop. He tried to go big--adding a whole lower section with a Hall Double-Double and condos, but in the 1980's the resort went bankrupt again.

Reorganization and a new owner brought some snowmaking and a new CTEC Quad to the summit. (Still there). They went bankrupt.

In 1990, a German movie mogul bought the mountain and had grandiose plans for bavarian castles. In 1995, he too filed Chapter 11. Within weeks it was discovered that he was using the resort for money laundering and was wanted by INTERPOL.

A group of local and international investors bought me just as the police were catching up with the former owner. They, too, had big plans. They spent a lot of $$$ on a new snowmaking system, a couple new trails, and began cutting the first glades to soon become trails. Things were going well...well, not counting the unpaid bills.

In 2000, an Atlanta bank caught up with them and I was back on the block again. A scrap dealer bought me and was not able to do much before a local landmark who needed me bought me and since then have been running me.

In 2005, I lost my Hall Double for a new HSQ. I have been called many things in the past: "Bear Kingdom," "Northern Star," and "The Sweet Spot." Who am I?
