I am currently engaged in a rather fierce debate with someone named "ATskier" over at the EpicSki forums over whether it's proper to disclose the name and location of secret stashes on public forums. I am adament that this is bad form and does a disservice to not only those who created the line, but also those who at least found it on their own. The debate can be found in the last few pages of this thread:

What do you all think about this?

I agree with you. For safety, liability reasons, and to keep the lines secret, it is best to communicate this information either in person (so as to assess the ability and interst of the other party) or via PM.

What is often funny is that the biggest thing for those not in the know is that the lines are secret...most can be found...but the 'secret' thing lures a lot of people. Despite this, best to keep it on the DL.

Hell ya. You want to throw a few adult beverages back, talk shop, and head out together the next day for an interective demo? Let's boogie. Internet message boards? Maybe not so much.

What dmc said.

Also, ATskier is well known for creating chaos on ski related websites. He used to post here using ATskier and beswift as user names. He's been banned from more than a few places.

Unless you enjoy debating with this troll, don't feed him.

Oh - this is beswift I'm dealing with? Oh geez. I should have known. Definitely the same MO as his stupidity here and elsewhere.

I can usually tell if someone is slackcountry ready after a couple minutes of talking...

I have BS lines that I take people too - just to get them off my back...

Part of the reason I don't belong to that board is it always seems to be an argument more than a discussion.
And you should never talk about anything that's not on the map in a public forum (even if it is well known). We had a similar discussion about some of the trails on Mansfield a while back.

It's also been discussed here:

Part of the reason these BC threads seem to stagnate is because folks are so protective.

that guy should seriously be banned for the internet, I really wonder what he is like in real life. probably is like 40 years old, lives in his parents basement and never even had one friend before

the general stash rule i go by is that i am almost always willing to show someone in person but will never tell someone (either in person or online, especially online in which everyone and their brother has access to the info). one important reason to show someone in person, is you can feel out their skiing ability and ensure you aren't getting someone in over there head. also, you ensure someone has the skill to not sideslipe a ton of snow off a narrow chute that can barely handle a dozen skiers, let alone one guy who can't hack it. folks going into stashes and backcountry want fresh snow, but they also do not want to do it alone. sharing 'secrets' is fun, it's a you show me yours and i show you mine aspect in which you earned a run by finding it and trade it like a baseball card to someone else that earned theirs. it's a people thing, you dish the goods to people you know will treat the place right and who you can enjoy some turns with. that isn't possible with internet disclosure.

Rivercoil has said it all. AND, if the master(de)bater is BESWIFT then I disagree with him without actually having read the thread. Didn't he make everyone crazy on the topic of helmets?

My opinion on this matter is as follows:

Personally I don't have a problem with sharing information on secret (and I use that term loosely) stashes. If you really think about it, how many people will actually find it on this forum, and then how many of them will actually go and ski it?

That beng said, I don't really have a problem with some people's "earn your stripes" attitude. If you don't want to reveal the location of your spot, then by all means don't. Just don't hate on others for being more forthcoming as it is their own decision.

tirolerpeter-you mean 'helmuts' right?

i would just like to add, some of my best runs have been with folks i just met on a hike. there is a comradery when people are both out looking for the same thing.

really no need to be hating on people that are forthcoming... because there really aren't any folks that are very forthcoming online. once you sip a little slice o' heaven, you understand how precious it is and will not be of the mind set to share it with 1,000 of your not so closer lurker friends.

here's to you lurkers  ;)

Secret Stashes?

Last March I caught a "powder dump" (what passes for one in the east anyway) at Hunter Mountain. Without repeating the trip posting, the snow was as close to "real" powder (as in Utah) as I have experienced here in the east in March. After a couple of solo runs, and a couple of casual chairlift "pickups" I made a couple of runs with a "local." I guess he felt comfortable with me after those runs, and invited me to follow him to a couple of "secret" stashes. One involved a hole in a fence and another involved ducking in behind some trees. Both led to some short (this is after all Hunter) but delightful nearly vertical drops that let us float down through the powder with great joy. It lasted about three runs before we basically trashed it. I thanked him for sharing and then skied with him until we both quit. That is as specific as I will get here.
